MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Titan Manifold Mods.

Just read a section of Vizard, and whilst not actually refering to Titans - both Howleys and Oselli's on 1275cc and larger he notes ports being 1.375 inch for the first 1 inch from manifold taper back to as cast.

I just bolted mine on as I did not remember this previoulsy - has anybody measured the standard one or opened theirs up prior to fitting ?

I opened mine up to suit the carb choke diameter Richard.

It was about right for a 1½" I think.

I just worked around the hole with a coarse grindstone in my B&D drill. It didn't take very long either, measured against a carb gasket hole diameter.

I didn't make it perfect to "some thous" though, just neareynuff.

Works very nicely I'd say.

(In homage to a Vizard article I remembered from the seventies in C&CC mag I left the ground out hole rough)

Thanks Bill, mine was correct for the carb end and matched the carb gasket - it was the manifold end I was concerned about after reading Mr V.

Interesting point! So, after scrabbling round trying to buy a manifold at the appropriate angle (10/15 deg) ruling out 95% of those available being set at 30 deg for minis, are there issues with throat size each end? THe HIF44 needs 1.75" I believe, so are most offerings 1.5" and need opening up? (Not that that is a problem but recently turned down a chance to buy an otherwise suitable one because it was only 1.5". Didn't realise that grinding them out was possibly normal practice).

I don't recall grinding mine out. I'll take a picture of the top of the manifold and see if I can decipher what brand/make it is.

I did a little work with a rotary file to match mine, but it was only a little and certainly wasn't enlarging to a larger size. Just minimising any steps at the gasket joints.
Guy W

Yup, that's what I remember too Guy, and that's prompted me to go and take a picture to see if I can ID my manifold.
Lawrence Slater

These are the only numbers and letters on my inlet manifold, on the ridge where the water heating passes through. Anybody recognise them?

Looks like. BC & M? -A/CR

I got the HIF44 from an MG metro, I've forgotten where I got the inlet manifold. I'm sure I didn't get it from the Metro, but my brain is dying, so maybe I did. lol.

But it was definitely a good fit to the carb flange without need of grinding out to match, other than as Guy describes.

My Titan was also 1.5" at the carb end. I fixed a 1.75" carb gasket and opened it out to suit.
Mark Whitmore

As per the others - I opened mine up from 1.5" to 1.75" with a rough/cheap stone. I seem to recall there was even a circle or ridge to work to (but maybe I scored that from a gasket?)
Dean Smith ('73 RWA)

Thanks all - its the cylinder head end Vizard was refering to when enlarging manifolds for 1275 and up.

1.375 inches then blending back to as cast about 1 inch in.
