MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Torque settings for Minilite wheel nuts.

Can anyone tell me if the torque settings are the same for Minilites as standard steel wheels.

Thanks
Roger

I doubt the studs would take much more having snapped a few.
mark heyworth

Yes, provided the stud threads are unchanged.
Greybeard

Don't forget to check that your studs are plenty long enough- the sae legal requirement is at least the same as the diameter of the stud, so for 3/8 stud @ 24tpi you need at least 3/8" engagement 9 turns--MINIMUM preferably 13-14 or more--the more the better
There's been plenty of nuts stripped out on alloy wheels because their studs are too short for the thicker wheels

Thanks Willy that hadn't occurred to me I'll check.
Roger D

Yep, I second what Willy says.

The Motorsport UK regulation (even if you aren't racing, it's a good baseline for safety recommendations) is I think 1.5 x diameter, so 13.5 turns.

Cheers,
Malc.

If you are still using a standard steel wheel as the spare, don't forget you won't be able to use it on the hubs with the longer studs. The nuts will bottom out. I had to buy a 5mm spacer to keep with the spare in case I ever have to use it.
Les Rose

Les, my spare is a Minilite, but I seldom carry a spare. I can't remember the last time I needed one but I do carry an aerosol can of tyre inflator and on long trips an electric inflator.
Roger D

Yes Roger, I also carry the inflator can. Like you I can't remember when I last had to use the spare, except that recently I had to return a new tyre which was deflating and learned about the studs problem.
Les Rose

Just checked the studs, 12/13 turns!
Roger D

I have modified the nuts to present more threads. I have std studs. Torque 40 ft lbs as per I use on my steel wheeled Frogeye
