MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Tow eyes

Two questions:

1) Does anyone know what function the rear extension that wraps under the ARB serves in this alterative design of tow eye? (see attached picture).

2) What, if anything, do people do about rear tow eyes or is it ok to just throw a strap around the axles?

Thanks

Jeremy Cogman

What picture Jeremy?

Did you mean THESE Towies? LOL.

Anam may have it, but if not do you mean these? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/114775116223?hash=item1ab92149bf:g:y9gAAOSwNeJfIGiv&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAoNy8NCvHm7clktdHGAQgG3vCgTZkbLTWwcdcuCr%2Bj%2Bb58HS6fvc4VbsYRqBj3zbWds4U2a265OOZaNpKUGZV41%2FbfAguSMw2FARZgxnk6sq4KG5torcGtbERjXy18IZzeUzl1Z9AFgNDY8cQX5eclhs53nNtiWII48F0vSy0UaIPOdq7PNV7RWbgnikY1jiT18RIuqhG9OxSmnu1tv1oVb8%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR9b6g77WYQ

Compared to the standard design: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115334548812?hash=item1ada798d4c:g:vxcAAOSw3W9iUbSm&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAoPHUtD%2FHS7g0z%2Fij2ggT%2Bz4nm0vNUNY8XtQdUc1LqLSBaQlGqBw9HshW5F4H%2Bef1K%2BwdBnd%2FlIW17Lp5cSRyiml8NVl%2BfKgbuCErV%2FMkb5VJ2j%2BNT7aDAZJ6CcbiDVbukl2tWz36x7FVmRxV3gXU1XUfvSitZbHKCyHfzKnOabHIOXMLdvDdpVFVT%2BdGuNiHu1804sIw8YWSRFt%2B9uJkv%2Bg%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR9b6g77WYQ

I do not have a clue, but wondered the same.

Interesting.

Never seen those 'alternative' types before. What's the point?

Doh, yes thanks Mike, I do mean the one in your top link.

Jeremy, you mentioned rear tow eyes; is this to meet regulations for competition purposes?

My initial solution was to attach a ready-made tow strap to one of the bolts attaching the bumper irons to the body. When not required to be visible it tucked nicely inside the over-rider. However, the single bolt attachment was far from adequate.

My second solution was cut from an off-cut of thick angle iron. The diameter of the hole is less than what the MSUK stipulates for some classes but it's not specified for the hill climb class that I run in; all that's required is a marked 'Tow' point. With the bumper iron obstructing the hole, it is a far from perfect solution but none of the scrutineers has complained - yet.

The worst point about it is the way it is just attached to the bumper mounting which doesn't look very strong. I would rather attach it to the chassis rail but haven't worked out how to do it yet.

If the worst comes to the worst and I end up in the nettles at the bottom of slope, the guy who does the recovery work at my local track will probably put a strop round the axle anyway.

My preferred solution is just to keep it on the tarmac.
