MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Type 9 box

Chaps

I have type 9 box fitted. Recently the gears have had a tendency to pop out of gear into neutral - especially 3rd and 5th. It's not a big deal at present, but thinking it may be in future. I have bled the clutch - seems OK.

Clutch release sping maybe...or something else. Big job to fix?

Guidance appreciated as ever.

if the rubber gear lever gaiter is too tight it will pull the lever out of gear (don't bother trying a MGA rubber gaiter)

two things that might improve the gear changes are the plastic saddle being changed £8ish plus P&P and top up/change/fresh gear oil after research and balls-up (technical term) I'm very happy running with Castrol Synstrans Multivehicle 75W-90 (GL-4) (better than the recommended Comma stuff I've found)

er, I meant to put - easy way to check is to pull the rubber gear lever gaiter out of its fixed location or remove it entirely and try drive the car with it out of place - if the lever doesn't drop out of gear then you have the answer at no expense and very little effort

plastic saddle bush in location

As it's only started happening recently, and if you haven't just added a stiff gaitor, then sadly you probably have a synchro problem, and that requires a g/box strip. It won't be the clutch.

It is possible that the detent plunger for the selector rod has worked loose, or even dropped out. At the front, top, left corner of the gearbox is a recessed allen headed grubscrew. It screws horizontally into the casing, loading a small spring that pushes the detent plunger against the selector shaft to locate into notches as you select the gears. If this is slack or missing there is no positive location of the selector shaft as it pulls back for 3rd and 5th gears. You should be able to check it by feel with an allen key either from beneath the car or by reaching down under the battery shelf.

This is less of a "prophet of doom" scenario than Lawrence's prediction, and therefore more appropriate to the time of the Season. (cue Lawrence)

Bah. Humbug! LOL :)

Lawrence, Happy Christmas!

I thought "the time of the season" would have triggered an involuntary response from you.

I think Lawrence was acting with all good intentions. His aim surely was to make sure there was sufficient time to nip over to the nearest branch of Moss in preparation for the gearbox coming out on Christmas morning. This off course would be followed with a request for help in order to get everone else out of the washing up and The Queen.
