MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Tyres 2026

I'm going to buy new tires. I rarely drive on circuits and mostly on highways, 6,000 km/year. My Uniroyal Rain Expert 2 tires were fine, but they're too old and worn around the edges, where entire blocks disappeared after track use. My research is focused on Continental e-contact 6 tires. Are there any better ones?

Flip, you might want to consider Blockley Tyres:

This may shock you.

Consider budget tyres.

I just fitted a pair of Runway Enduro 726 165/70R13 79T to my Sprite.

£117 inc vat fitted price.

Made by Giti Tire. Symetrical tread. Summer tyre.

I've got them on the rear. I don't do track driving, but I don't drive like a nun on the roads either.

I've used them in the wet and the dry, and have no trouble keeping the rear end in line hammering round bends at a decent speed.

I wanted summer tyres for harder wearing and longer life. I wanted 165/70 13s and they ain't cheap in the main brands. So I took a punt after reading a lot of reviews. They are well rated.

So far about 400 miles, and I'm very happy with them.

The UniRoyal Rainex tyres I had a few years ago wore out quickly, especially on the front outer edges. I seem to recall a couple of track days! I would also suggest mid-price tyres. The present Kumhos are lasting well and are nice to drive on.
Les Rose

I got a deal on Falken Sinceras a few years back - they're original size I.e. 145/80x13.

Over the past quarter century, I've owned many different tires, including:

Firestones were terrible on both wet and dry surfaces.
Michelin Eco tires were excellent in straight lines, a bit less so in corners, but very predictable. The Xas tires were excellent on the road, a bit less so on the track, but now unaffordable.
Uniroyal Rain Expert 2 tires were excellent in straight lines, very good in corners, and also on the track, but they are now too old and worn out at the edges. The new Rain Expert 3 tires seem to be wobbly.
The Vredestijn Quartrac 5 tires have very good reviews. So do the Continental tires. Does anyone have experience with the Conti tires?

Yep exactly what I found when fitted on the rear of my Sprite. Any deviation from a straight path caused the back end to snake, and on bends positively lethal.

But on the front they are really good, both wet and dry. Very odd.

I fitted a pair of Runway Enduro 726 165/70R13 79T to my Sprite, £117 inc vat fitted price, in early Feb this year. And since then I've done about 2 thousand miles as I've been up and down to the coast frequently.

I've got them on the rear. I can now confirm they are EXCELLENT. Great road holding in wet and dry, and look like they are going to wear very well too.

I have Continental 155-80-13 on my Sebring Rep. i have no complaints.

Alan Anstead

I used to have Continental on my Beemers Alan. Found them to be great tyres too.

But I'm a cheapskate at heart 🤣🤣, so getting a very decent tyre, and for a budget price, is always going to make me smile. 🙂.

My 1968 Midget had Pirelli Cinturato radial tyres fitted as standard from new, it's interesting to observe from the posts that no one appears to be fitting this brand of tyre anymore, could this be due to the cost of this brand or because there are more tyres available now which are more suitable for fitting to our cars and perform better?
J Bond

I have Pirelli Cinturatos on my 69 Sprite which were the only tyre with a suitable speed rating (I needed H but they exceed that) and 70 profile in a 13".
Daniel

Yep cost 007. Seem to be out of stock too for 165 70 13.

How much did you pay?

Great tyre though, I used to have them on my Sprite.

How much did you pay Daniel? Where from?

Looks like another tyre option for those who want 145 section: https://www.mgocspares.co.uk/product/w801/barum-brillantis-2-145-80-13-75t
M Wood

Barum were the last two I bought. I wouldnt recommend them as the sidewalls are too soft. I put them on the back and they felt unstable.

Flip,

Sorry - didn't see this post.

I have Goodyears on my Sprite, but have had great service from Conti's.

I have just had 175x60 R15 Ultra Contacts fitted to a Civic, I'll let you know how I get on with them
