MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Water pumps

Hello,

I ordered a new water pump from Moss and the one on the left of picture turned up. Apart from the totally different impeller, I noted that the hole for the dowel is too big. So I ordered another one from Abingdon Parts which is made by County.

Any thoughts on the new design?

Moss have agreed to refund me.

James Paul

James. For many years now, there have been two types of impellers used in MG water pumps--the cast one and the bent metal one. Many people believe (or used to) that the cast impeller is of better design and will perform more efficiently. But, I have never seen any testing done that would provide a factual basis for such a belief.

To me the one on the right looks far better quality all round, notably the casting looks better and better lips on the hose connections.

The solid impeller is as original.
The original were of course cast iron.

The Moss pump is clearly a product with no quality control. The 5/16 dowels are there to accurately position the pump - so if over drilled to that extent the pump is only fit for the bin !!!

Not sure how we can improve this issue as price is not the driver here, as these are made for all ‘A’ series engines and just lack quality control.

My latest one came from Minispares, it has a plastic impeller. I’ve removed it after a few hundred miles (for an engine rebuild) and all seemed fine. Quality looks good and they do one with or without by-pass.

I usually find Minispares by far the best for generic A Series engine parts.

I would generally agree but I had some real (and expensive) issues with 2 sets of cam followers which were incorrectly ground. I returned one set (unused and still sealed) but they refused a refund saying they were not responsible for manufacturing flaws.......!

Did you insist Bob?

"Whose liability is it?
A supplier or manufacturer of defective products can be liable under their contractual relationships and/or under the law of tort. Contractual liability arises if the product or service provided under an agreement is faulty or defective. This would constitute a breach of contract because there are implied terms in the contract that the goods or services must be fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality."

Surely it still the old Sales of Goods Act fit for purpose seller's responsibility - or has that been updated.

Regardless, it's a claim against the seller and up to them to sort it with the manufacturer or their supplier.

Breach of contract comes to mind.

Lot time since I was on day-release studying such things.

Nigel Atkins

Was that day release for good behaviour in preparation for parole Nigel? 🤣🤣.

Mini Spares for engine parts whereever possible for me. Always good quality.
They have deep impeller water pump that pushes more water around.
Dave Brown

I have on of those deep impeller type pumps sitting patiently in its box, Dave.
It too was supplied by Minispares as the one currently fitted started 'squealing' last year.
Strangely the original has quietened down now that it senses its potential replacement is present.

On the subject of pumps not sure they were designed to pump peanuts round the engine.

Just did my first flush and inspection of the radiator since I bought the car 9 years ago. Was happy to see it hold water without any leaks, but then did the flush and all these peanuts started flowing out!

>>> 'Surely it still the old Sales of Goods Act fit for purpose seller's responsibility - or has that been updated.'

- Indeed it has Nigel; there is now the "The Consumer Rights Act (2015)", which actually give the buyer more rights!
J Smith

Thanks. I'm sure I must have heard it mention but it has lodged in my old feeble brain, so those consumer rights weren't better in 'my day' then. 🙃

Nigel Atkins

Anam,
I knew you'd pick up on the day release. 🤣

I had problems with the aluminum casting cracking once when a generator bearing started to fail. The vibration got it early on. I prefer the cast iron version.

Consumer protection in the UK? Must be nice. What a country!

Very interesting about the badly made cam followers as I just had an expensive engine failure at Spa, having just rebuilt the engine using a set of race lightened followers from MED. One of then broke in half, starting from the oil drain hole. On inspection they are all bored marginally off centre too. Probable that they all come from the same factory somewhere, and a faulty batch has been put into circulation. Have to be choosy and innovative as to where I buy the next set from...
