MG Midget and Sprite Technical - What is this?

I am sure I will be proved a fool as it looks obvious, but what is this piece of electrical hardware please? It has a contact at the base for the red wire, and the cap has a symbol of a cigarette with a X through it - so I presume not for a lighter.... some sort of socket perhaps? what for?

Oggers

Typical accessory socket widely available for sat nav etc.

Trev posted whilst I was fetching links, he gave the quick answer but if you want more detail see below -

" . . two variants: one that works with cigarette lighters and one that doesn’t."

Rather than me confuse you have a link - https://www.lifewire.com/car-cigarette-lighter-12v-socket-534754

and for those with a technical or specification or tables interest - http://standards.sae.org/j563_199003/

I should have put that the standards quoted are SAE American based and this link might be more appropriate - https://www.lifewire.com/cigarette-lighter-vs-accessory-socket-534783

Yepp... that's what we use here in the USA to plug our phones into to charge

Looks like part of a thumb to me.

I'll fetch my coat.

Thanks chaps - obliged. Sat nav....What on Earth is a sat nav! Don't need one of those up here. I can read signs, ask folk, or else I know where I'm going...unless in Ireland, where on one memorable occcasion I asked a hooded man carrying a scythe..I kid you not... if he knew the the way to Roundstone. He replied that he did...and then walked off.

Gday Oggers
A more elegant solution is to replace the cigarette lighter socket with one of these - see pic
You can plug two USB cables into the socket which has the power supply built in, no more bulky cigarette style plugs and connection issues.HTH

PS some devices however still use the old plug because they need 12volts

If you have enough gadgets you can get one with two sockets and two usbs.

You can also get a small insert adapter that goes into a standard socket and converts it to 2 USB ports.

Would the USB connection(s) be of more use?
Oggers

"Would the USB connection(s) be of more use?"

That depends what kit you have.

I use an adapter with 3x 12v sockets and a USB.
