MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Windscreen frame question

Hi all.
The windscreen frame on my Mk III is a bit tarnished in places and autosol doesn't seem to shift it or clean it off.
Any recommendations for cleaning stuff?
cheers colin

Good question, mine's the same and depite vigorous cleaning with said Autosol, still looks a bit rubbish. Be interested in what responses you get Colin.
You could always paint it satin black and claim it's the rare version :)

I got a buffing kit from halfords which came with a couple of semi-abrasive sticks and two soft polishing wheels for use in an electric drill. The wheels and abrasives were graded as coarse and fine and did provide an easier way of putting more elbow grease into it.
It didn't totally remove the very bad areas but the bits in between looked better.

The reason the results are not very good is that the whole of the windscreen surround is anodised. The top and bottom rails are slightly brighter than the uprights, but they are all anodised. In time the anodising breaks down, but not uniformally, hence the patchy appearance. So, the only way to smarten up your windscreen is to completely get rid of the anodising. Autosol by itself won't move it, so do it with wet and dry paper. I started of with 320s then 600s then 1200s then I finished off with Solvol Autosol. The results are good, but it does take time and elbow grease.
Hope this helps.

I'm just in the process of restoring my frame ready for fitment on a lenham that i will be building.

I have decided to have the frame components nickel plated which of course requires the items to be polished etc.

I started this two weekends ago and just have the top frame to do.

This entailed a 40G wheel, then a 80G wheel followed by hours and hours of hand finishing with 80G - 120G - 180G - 240G - 320G - 400G - 800G.

I then spent around 1+ hour on my polishing machine first with grey compound then green, blue and finally yellow - attached picture should give you an idea of the finish.

On a side note has anybody replaced the rivets that hold the roof clips and mirror supports with 5mm stainless steel dome head capscrews as all the holes in my frame are pretty close to the tapping size for a 5mm thread.

I'd need sunglasses to look at your windscreen frame!! Fantastic - wish mine looked like that.
