MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Wndow glass, strips en quarterlights

Hi there

I removed the quaterlights and window glass from my MK IV sprite. The strips needed replacement and so did the doors.

Anyway, I am assembling it all now and got the strips both in place (inside and outside with the clps). The glass is in and the mechanism is inplace and connected to the glass.

Now I want to reinstall the quaterlight. I cannot get it in.... What is the correct procedure? Do I have to loosen the glass guide (two bolts)?

Please help

Or do I have to install the inner strip AFTER the quarter light?

luckily you can install the quarter light assembly after the inner and outer weatherstrips, but you do need to drop the glass down inside of the door to slip the quarter light assembly past it, in to the door

if it is helpful, here is a simple checklist for door assembly:

As Norm says and heave ho but watch that glass its awful tight in there.

I can confirm that Norm's method is the definive guide to door assembly. I printed it off just in case I needed it in future and Lo and Behold I got another project car so willvbe putting it to good use again.

Right, so if I understand well you mean that I remove the glass from the vertical guide on the door lock side in order to create space for the quaterlight to get in. I can / must (?) leave the strips installed

Correct?

Arnold

PS When I removed the quaterlight I had to use quite some force. It is slightly bent.....:-( Can I just bent that back / any tricks?

I only wanted to replace the quarterlite and frame and did not remove anything (apart from an internal shuffle). My only other replacement was the top of door rubber seal that I forgot the first time. (doh).

a.o.,

in order to pass the quarter light assembly through the top of the door, I found that I had to not only remove the rear vertical guide, but also drop the glass off of the regulator (unbolt the rear guide, drop it to the bottom of the door, unbolt the regulator and rotate it until the glass slips off, drop them both to the bottom of the door

while slipping the quarter light into the door, it is necessary to guide it past the loose glass (rotate the assembly forward and insert at an angle), and down in to place, then you can begin to re-assemble

if the parts were bent during your dis-assembly, then hopefully you can bend them back into shape without breaking the welds (rust will form in the crack) and get them to fit the shape of things again

Sorry, a.o. yes, as Norm says, I undid stuff and reassembled the quarter light while the glass and mechanism were all loose in the door. I did not remove the rear guide but I did undo the regulator (winder) and displaced the glass. The quarter light frame was all tightened up after the glass was back in the runners. (Only takes about 1/2 an hour the second time :-)

And all while dodging razor sharp metal lips and edges

Yepp its a real horror house in there...if you wait till beggers night of hollows eve... you can snag a knee high guel as a walking blood bank for transfuisions...cause your going to loose several quarts of the red stuff if you stay inside the door long enough

Well Prop, I'll post the result :-)

Anyway, I hope to get it all in. Thx sofar guys!

Ok, spent about half a day and I think the trick is to install the glass and the quarterlight simultanous. Lower them together in the door with strips and glass already in the door. Raise the glass by hand as far up as possible and then together with the quarterlight down.

Strips etc easy. I have not yet reinstalled the rear guide
