MG MG Y Type - 1.25 MG - 3148

Hello MGY'ers
Just going through my boxes of bits and pieces, sorting out what's needed for my project car and what's not and found an ID plate not belonging to what I have
Was going to throw it but thought it might be interesting to find it's rightful home--
It's aluminium and has some green paint on it that looks sort of original maybe
395mmX11mm
slightly rounded on the ends with a rivet hole in each end and has
1.25 MG - 3148 -stamped into it
Is this MGY or something else like a seperate body number or something
The collection of bits I have, I suspect came from more than one car
It would be interesting to find a home for it
Bit of an MGY restoration novice
Your opinion will be appreciated

I am new to the Y scene, but could it be the car ID plate that is attached to the body under the rear bonnet hinge.

If so it could belong to YT 3148, owned by Mike and Suzanne Elderfield, New South Wales (as per YTs on Parade)

Attached is a photo of Tony Slattery's YT showing where the plate is located.

Tony, Paul or someone with more knowledge please correct me, if I am wrong.

cheers

Thanks for posting this on the BBS.

Can I ask that you register your Y Type with us please giving us as much detail as possible including as many of the numbers we ask for in the appropriate fields?

The Website URL for the on line form is http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/registeryoury.shtml.

The plate you show is known as the 125 MGY plate and is actually from an MG Y Type. The digits on it of (3148) are the first four digits of the body number on the B281 plate where the full body number would be MG 3148 / XXXX where XXXX is also a number sequence.

If your car has a B281 plate with the number MG 3148 / XXXX then this is actually from your car. Very often (for an unknown reason) some of these ancilliary plates more often than not go missing from a car during restoration. The number is usually though within a range of 245 to 270 numbers lower than the CAR/Chassis number on the guarantee plate and front left chassis leg extension (these last two numbers SHOULD be the same unless someone has switch tags ... which also happens!!).

If you feel that the tag isnt from your car, please use the CONTACT US page (http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/contactus.shtml) and contact Tony Slattery, our Australian Representative who will take it off your hands until we find a car with the appropriate body number so we can get it to the right owner hopefully.

Look forward to receiving your registration shortly and finding out more about your 'Project Car'.

Thanks Stuart-Paul
My car, or what I have of it is on the register----
Basically I have a rolling chassis with boxes of parts from two cars--the chassis is damaged a bit
I have no other i.d. plates and the rego sticker shows last registered late 50s
I'm now thinking that because this plate and some other parts including the seats are green, that the following has happened
My car which should be maroon was possibly dismantled after being damaged
I suspect that then a green car that this plate and seats, trim etc came from was rebirthed as the maroon car
using the body plate etc off the maroon car
They probably didn't realise there was a number stamped on the chassis leg
Then I suspect all the bits I have were possibly kept for spares-I bought my bundle from a deceased estate and apparently it hadn't seen daylight for over 50 years and apart from this bit of info, that is all I can find out from the guy's son
I think I'll keep the plate as it sort of fits in with my chassis No. being around the area you suggest the numbers run as I guess it won't be of any real use to anybody else really if the body has been swapped onto another car
Thanks for your interest / info
Cheers

Stuart--I understand the YT3148-Elderfield car is a well documented original car and that although this plate is a matching No the actual body No of that car would be different again compared to the chassis no
It would have been real smart if they had stamped everything with matching Nos. during production eh!!

Actually I might even contact them and see if they would like the plate anyway---just because

Hi Will

My YT was in Tasmania and partially restored there before being taken to Canberra. (See the known history of my car YT4310 in Ys on Parade). My car is Green but has non-original seats in tan and I think the rest of the upholstery is also not original.

I am unsure if my car has the plate we are talking about, I will check in the morning. I know it is missing the Body Type/Number plate which is affixed to the bulkhead (not those on the side of the battery box).

Which one is your car then please? I do not have a listing under your name unless I misspelled it? Email me off line about this please using the link attached.

As to the numbering of everything with the same number during manufacture, Abingdon never actually manufactured anything. They were an Assembly plant. They fabricated the chassis on site at the plant and then bolted on components made by others - engines from Nuffield Engine plant, radiators from Nuffield Radiators, car bodies from Nuffield Car Body plant and they all carried the numbers from those plants, hence the different numbers on everything.

You have mail

Stuart
Hi - I got the measurement of the plate wrong
It is 95mmx11mm--don't know how that 395 got out of my fat finger
If you are looking for where the plate fits, the mounting holes are 2.5mm diameter and at 88mm centres

Cheers guys

Hi again William,
As I stated in an earlier post I was a newby to Y/Ts and should have checked the "Let there be Y's" CD before posting. LTBYs states that the 125 MGY plates were only attached to Y Saloons.

The photo of Tony's Y/T, I posted, shows that car's Bulkhead plate (which were only on Y/Ts and welded to the body).

My apologies for leading you in the wrong direction.

Not a problem Stuart
It's all a big learning curve to me
