MG MG Y Type - 1952 MG YB NO POWER

I need help, I have rebuilt the engine, bored 20 thousand
oversize, new camshaft and lifters, rebuilt carb, and dist. The car runs like a clock no noises no smoke and no
power, I wonder if the exhaust is to little the pipes are original and are very small. I have set the timing the way the manual instructs. I have tried with timing light nothing seems to help. The car only has 49 thousand miles on it. The engine had no power before the rebuild. Any help would be appreciate.
Thanks Doug

Lots of places to start, what where the condition of the pistons, etc, before you rebuilt it? Have you checked the float level in the carby, may be running lean?

Martin Cutler

Martin, thanks for the reply. The rings were broke on the #2 piston, the engine had the incorrect head gasket on it, the carb was running rich & the YB smoked. I rebuilt the carb and there is no smoke whatsoever now. The plugs are now burning a brownish-grey. She runs very smooth, quiet, oil leak free, but she doesn't want to pull up hills. I am installing a larger exhaust system in the morning which should help some.

Also, I am trying to locate an original vintage radio antenna that I can install on the roof of the YB. I haven't had any luck. Perhaps some of you might know of one for sale.

Many thanks, Doug

At the risk of teaching you to suck eggs - are your inlet / exhaust valves at the correct gap?, Presumably also you have good compression in all pistons now?

Paul Barrow

Paul, the valve adjustment is correct and the compression ratio is approximately 150 pounds. Installed larger exhaust system on th YB yesterday and the idle went from 800 to 1000 rpm's. This seems to help considerably. Thanks for reply. Doug

Sounds as if the camshaft timing is one tooth retarded.

If you mess about with that cam timing idea, I spoke with some one the other day who said he always sets his T-series engines up with a 4 degree cam advance and that moves the power band into a more useable rpm range. Since most people arn't comfortable with reving up the engine they miss out on most of maximum tourque range of the engine, advancing the cam brings the power range down. Any thoughts on this guys?

I want to thank everybody that helped with no power problem i was having with the xpag yb engine. The problem has been solved it was timing. The article that David Dubois wrote in the T seies TD-TF Archive on how to set the timing worked great. The engine has more power and runs real Quiet no spark rattle or misfire. Thanks again
