MG MG Y Type - A quickie

Hi,

Regarding the Dynamo adjusting strap.....

Those supplied by Brown and Gammons and Moss are 'cranked' whilst the one I have is flat....was there a difference between T type and Y type or is mine a 'wrongun'

Rob King

Have you actually got one from Moss? What part number did you get? I cannot vouch for anything from Brown and Gammons as they are not a supplier I work with, but certainly it should be flat.

You probably either specified the wrong part number Rob and/or were sent the wrong one, hence why I am asking what MOSS part number you ordered. Since no one out there except NTG actually quotes to supply parts for a Y (as opposed to a TABC or a TD/TF) I am inclined in the first instance to use their (NTG) part numbers which can be found on the Parts Cross Reference pages at http://www.mgytypes.org. I have tried to match correctly to Moss Part numbers too (no guarantees I have that absolutely right but if I dont, let me know and I can investigate it and get it corrected, please note) as Moss is also a recommended supplier. B&G are not.

Hope this helps,

Paul

Mine is cranked and I had to use shims to get the dynamo in line with the crankshaft pully. Do I have a 'wrong' strap?
Willem vd Veer

OK I guess I should have asked earlier, in which plane is it cranked? Is it that the piece is essentially flat but "cranked" or "stepped" so that the hole for the block bolt is stepped forward or back (depending on which way up it is) or is it "cranked" as in "bent"? I was assuming Rob was describing the crank as a bend rather than as a step. So can we establish what we all are meaning by "cranked"?

Hi Paul,
In answer to your first post...I have not bought one. I have the one which came with the car but, as I have described in other posts, this was dismantled 20 years ago...the one I have is flat.

As a result of trying to obtain the correct bolt for attaching the strap to the block I have been perusing the catalogues of the T Type parts suppliers. All of the 'exploded' diagrams show a cranked strap...that is 'bent'.

I have since looked at NTGs photos (rather than the catalogue) they show a flat strap for the YA YT TB and TC but a cranked strap for the YB and TF....I cant understand why there would be a difference.....anyway you seem to be right and I seem to have the correct strap. Does Willem have a YB?

Thanks again Paul

Hi Rob

Different dynamos were used on later cars I think and the casings may have differed too would be my guess as to which and why.

The important thing is that the pulley on the dynamo/generator must align with the water pump. To achieve this, you may just need to use slightly longer bolts (and nut) and then ensure that any gap is filled up using washers as spacer shims. That will see you right.

Hope that helps.

Hi,
Perhaps these images will help. Shows the "cranked" bracket on my 1952 YB, 0321. It is fitted with a Lucas C39 PV2 LO 222258 12V Dynamo.
