MG MG Y Type - After 44 years.... the curious missing spring

Right - no sniggering, please....

Two years ago I discovered, after a mere 42 years of ownership, that UMG 366 was carrying the wrong cooling water exit elbow from the head to the header tank. Several of you kindly helped to diagnose the problem, and she now sports the correct item.

Now, after 44 years, another discovery: my carburettor doesn't seem to have a jet return spring fitted (see attached pic). I only noticed this because I was given an early 1950s manual for Nuffield Wolseleys recently, and the carb drawing for the Ten (which as you all know sports the 1140cc equivalent of the MG XPAG engine as used in the Morrises and Wolseleys of 1938-48) clearly shows a return spring. I'm not sure how I've missed this in my Y workshop manual or in pics of other engine compartments.....

So - should my Y have a return spring? If so, it would normally be mounted between a short extension to the jet lever and the drilled hole in the carb body seen in my pic. I'm not sure how it would have gone missing - perhaps in an earlier carb rebuild the wrong jet lever was fitted. Perhaps the same fitter who managed to fit a TC water elbow was just using up a box of bits when the engine was replaced in 1955. Who can say?

All advice, pics, comments gratefully received as always!

Hi Tim,

The spring is very useful for pushing back the jet after using the choke. I would say that it is essential for a consistent mixture.

I have a correct arm and original spring 'surplus to my needs' and as you helped me with the wiring loom years ago, I will send them to you free off charge if you need them.

please contact me on my gMail.com account: vdveery5888.

If anyone has the choke levers and linkages for a twin (TC/TD) SU H2 XPAG setup; I'm looking for a set to finish the conversion of my Y.

Thanks guys: it's pretty clear then. I had wondered several times how to make sure the jet returned properly to its hot-running position, as the "push" effect of the choke cable isn't enough: now I know!

Richard - thanks for the PDF, which is a work of art in itself; Paul - I think it's about time I invested in the CD!

Willem - thank you very much for your kind offer, and I'll be in touch by email. Dank u wel!

I'll post a pic of the improved carburettor after the work's done.

Tim,

I got your message. Here's a picture of the parts, ready for dispatch.

At last, after at least 44 years, UMG366 has a jet return spring. Compare this pic to the one on my first post above.... the choke now snaps off beautifully, and mixture control is spot-on.

Big thank-you to Willem for raiding his parts bin and providing such a beautifully-polished new jet control lever. Time to clean the carb and linkages, refinish the manifold, repaint the block.....

Tim Griggs

Thanks for showing off the result.

I'm glad my surplus parts ended up on a Y-type instead of the old copper bin.
