MG MG Y Type - Almond Green Metallic

Over on the TD-TF board we are having a discussion on metallic almond green paint. Was this colour also used on Y types? Does anyone have any period literature which specifically mentions the metallic quality of the paint?
Thank you in advance.
Matthew.

Hi Matthew: yes, Almond Green was used on Y-types. You've probably found the information on colour schemes elsewhere here on mgytypes.org My 1951 car was originally delivered in this colour, with the cream hide interior.

Almond Green and Sun Bronze were the two metallic shades offered at the time. Though they must have seemed revolutionary at a time when most cars were still painted black, anecdotal evidence suggests that the quality of the paint was poor: my car was repainted in 1955, and it seems to have been fairly common that metallics peeled off the base coat. Ford were still having this problem in the late sixties in the UK - the sight of quite young cars with paint curling off the roof and bonnet was common.

There is a Renault metallic green from the early seventies which is apparently quite a close match to Almond Green if you're looking for a modern equivalent!

Thank you Tim and R. E. Knight.
Interesting to read "No factory documentation as to original colour specifications or formulas has ever been found and there is still much controversy as to some of the original colour finishes on these cars". We are finding the same problem in T types.
Does anyone happen to have a picture of an "MG Green" Metallic car please?

Cheers,
Matthew.

There is one in Australia - the late Gary Turner car. You should remember this car Matthew ?.

My car - Y 5270 was originally Almond Green Metallic Matthew. When I had it resprayed I used the formula I have given on the colors page at http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/colours.shtml and it was actually a very good match for the original paint chips we found.

Thank you Tony and Paul.
Yes, I certainly remember Gary's car. Several shades lighter than Almond, so that would be MG Green yes?

I have attached a poor scan from prints I took of Gary's car in the 1980's. If anyone has a better photo then I would be keen to see it.

Cheers,
Matthew.

Back in the early 1970s the nearest match to the green you are looking for was Renault 941 metallic. This was obtainable in cellulose. I don't know if this is obtainable today in two pack. Paul

Hi
My YB was originally Almond Green metallic. A fairly close match was the Mercedes Pine Green Metallic No 862. Don't know if it still available? Keith

Thank you for the formula codes Paul and Keith, however I am not planning on doing any painting, its just period references and photos of factory paint that I am after.

Cheers,
Matthew.
