That's a wicked amount of profit being taken there. I seem to recall it went for half that last time it sold - maybe I am wrong?

If you want a fast MG saloon, then go for the ZA that is for sale being sold by Warren Marsh for only £3750-ish. It has a 1622cc engine, MGB overdrive gearbox and banjo rear axle, plus lots of other mods for use on today's road. But it still looks bog-standard. A real bargain. It was at Silverstone.

Just because I like evidence based criticism; the Dick Jacobs YB was sold at auction, June 22nd 2007 (Bonhams at Goodwood) for £6,900.

Reserve was £5 - 7,000 so it seems a fairish price at the time.

Perhaps we only need reminding that the value of a car is in its usefulness to the owner; the cost of a car is its usefulness to a vendor.

And mine too ... with the inclination ... but without the money!!

Thank for the research Andrew - that would be a 160% mark up!

Quite agree with Andrew's comment. The YB when sold at I believe the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year was a good buy. However, £18k is utterly ridiculous. It will be intriguing to see when it is sold if the Register is advised and whether the new owner is prepared to let on how much he or she paid for it!

Yes, it's a man's world, that of MGs ! And a long time since the female Y team's participation in the Rally Monte Carlo. So, step forward, women enthusiasts !

Guys, you need to come to some of the US gatherings. I am currently at GOF West 2008 and there are a good number of lady owners here! Plus I can think of at least 3-4 Y owners also who are ladies too (not all of whom are on Ys on Parade are they Tracey?), so yes guys, they do exist!! Like Ys - rare, but of quality!

"I can think of 3-4 Y owners who are ladies"

3 to 4? So the fourth one that you're not certain of Paul - is it that you're not sure whether they own a Y type or that you're not 100% confident that they are a lady?

:-)

Cheers,
Saul.

I just failed to buy this car at the auction at the FOS last year - was a little gutted to see what the bloke who did buy it wants for it! It was rather tatty but great history. Who knows, the bloke who bought it may have spent some money on it ( he has added the roundels on the doors!). He also had to pay the buyers premium and value added tax on that, plus trnasport home. All in say another £2k. Personally I wouldnt have the guts to "race" a Y type saloon!
mgman

Looking at the sales website the car went for £6.9k including buyers premium.I did not appreciate that VAT needed to be added to this which would add a further £1k. So around £8k+plus as you say transport.

It's a great pity you couldn't have bought the car - at least it would be with someone prepared to appreciate it.

I assume that the purchaser then sold it on to the dealer - it would be intriguing to know what the mark up was.

As has been mentioned in this column it's very much a case of what someone (him, her or it eh Saul!)is willing to pay. Whatever the outcome I do hope the eventual owner brings it out to play in a Y Register Event.

Sincerely

Actually the proprietor of the garage selling the car now is the bloke who bought it at auction. He's an MG dealer and is well known in auction circles. His cars seem good but always about 30% too much. I think the car (if fettled up) is probably worth £10 to £12k given its history. He'd probably take £15k.
mgman

VAT would only be due on the Buyer's Premium, not on the price of the car, as the car is a second hand one.
