MG MG Y Type - Bargain YB?

https://cars.bonhams.com/auction/28307/lot/512/1951-mg-yb-sports-saloon-chassis-no-xpag8c217022/

Just sold at Bonham's Beaulieu sale.

Chassis number looks odd.

Despite what Bonhams say, it is not a YB. According to the production records, the Y type with chassis number Y7185 was fitted with engine XPAG/SC2/17022 on the 26-9-1951.
It is a pity that they did not read the bulkhead plate correctly, and could not be bothered to raise the 'clip' so that a decent photo could be taken.

You are right, of course. I was just so shocked at the low price it made.

And to think they could have looked up the registration plate for free on our online database too!

There may be a reason why Bonhams did not check any website database.
If you go to the MG Enthusiasts “International MG Y type Register”, there is a page to register, or enter the details of, a Y type. However, there does not appear to be any way of looking up or checking the details of a Y type.
If you go to the MGCC Y type Register “Guarantee Plate Ledger”, the list is only for YB chassis & original engine numbers, with installation dates, up to the 15-6-1953. Car registration numbers are not included.
There is also David Pelham’s excellent list, but only for YTs, and car registration numbers are not included.
I suppose Bonhams could have telephoned the MGCC.

Incorrect info--
If you enter the chassis number Y7185 into the International database the details of the car are there complete with a picture of the car

It's an easy mistake for a not-over-careful auction house to make: with its chassis number in the low 7000s this car is, surely, one of the "twilight zone" cars right on the change from Y to YB? So it's a Y body with an SC2-series engine. Early hubcaps, too, for some reason.
Tim Griggs

Well, Bonhams seem to think the engine number is the chassis number, and even the number XPAG/8C2/17022 is not the correct engine number. I wonder where they got the ‘YB’ from, as it is not the chassis number prefix.
I did find the car details in the International MG Y type Register database, with the engine number listed as XPAG/SC2/17022.
However, the car now has a Morris Motors replacement engine, number B94597, which Bonhams missed.
They also couldn't even get the car registration number right!

Haha missed that Typo in the description R Wilson! I was going from one of the pictures :)!

Makes you wonder what they do for their auction fee!
