MG MG Y Type - Beginning restoration YA/YB

I have just started tearing down the two cars I have to see which one is the better candidate for restoration. The sills, and the lower door frames on both cars are in sad shape and will need replacement. Is any replacement sheet metal being sold for these cars? My second problem is the roof gutter. The metal from the front edge of the roof, down the front edge of the door is in very bad shape. Is it a seperate piece that can be replaced? It looks to be attached with lead. I will make one complete car out of the two somehow. At some point I will have a surplus of parts to sell also. Any help will be appreciated.

I just got a '49 YT that I had hoped to restore. it turns out that it is too far gone to bring back to life with my skills. Someone with better restoration capabilities might be able to do it.

Although they are a different series, they do share some common parts. I might be able to help you out. My expertise is the TD. I think that the YT might be too much for me.

Hi Tim

Yes there are some panels available.

Both sills and lower door skins are available - contact Mick Beakhouse at Sportscar Metalworks in the UK. His details are on the Links page at www.mgytypes.org under <Suppliers> then <Body Panels>. I would strongly suggest it is worth your while calling him on the phone and discussing your exact needs with him first - 011 44 1753 654144 and they are open Thursday and Friday this week (No Thanksgiving in the UK) but they are 5 hours ahead of Eastern Time Zone (8 ahead of Pacific).

With respect to the front piece - email me some pictures please for me to advise you seperately on that - use the link on this posting.

Mr. Markle, just a note to let you know my grandson and I are underway on a restoration of a YB in Georgia. Wish you were a little closer so we could comiserate together! Let us know if we can help, but Paul is a far greater source of knowledge. Larry

I did a little more disassembly over the weekend. I think I will be able to salvage parts of the door openings from the donor car to use on the restoree. I also did some reading and picture review in Let there be Y's, and I think I can fabricate the sill pieces I need. If I do all the sill repairs and door opening repairs before I disturb the tub/frame fit, I should be ok. The door fit looks good, but I think I will switch doors also since the donor doors look better. I will try to post some pics.

This will be a long project for me, as I have two other restorations underway that will finish ahead of it. I don't know what will be surplus for a while. What do you need?
T I Markle

Tim, I need 1 or 2 ashtrays for the rear of the front seats. Other misc chrome parts. Thanks. Larry

Larry,
Any chrome parts I have would need to be rechromed, but I will look to see.

I am also starting a YT restoration on 2859. I'm in NC and would be glad to help Mark Strange in VA with consulting help. Currently rebuilding doors and looking at the trunk lid and pondering.
