MG MG Y Type - Birkbecks Odyssey

Just read your account in the 'Octagon' of your journey across Spain and back, well done to both of you. Just shows that the Y type is still a capable car if well looked after. I must endorse your concerns about 2019 I think its best described as rather like the ship of state foundering in the north sea with no hope of rescue, its already listing badly under a trade imbalance. So lets get out and enjoy our cars on the Continent before those reams of red tape are applied. Bryan

Bryan,

I too loved the read up of Birkbecks trip, it was inspirational, and having too enjoyed taking my Y's to France, Holland and Germany I would like to go to Channel Islands, Spain and Portugal at some point too.

2019...as others have so often told me, best leave politics out of BBS. It's well documented that Jerry was against the result, others I'm sure were pleased. One thing is for sure is no European pro or against EU will turn away business, if you have pounds to spend in Europe I can guarentee they will forever be accepted.

Bryan,

In addition the videos from David Pelham of past european trips now on videos links

Shows how some of the Y Types are still going strong and seen at recent events such as the IOW event in September 2017...superb to see.

Since I've been through a war I have no time for fools. History has not yet finished.
I suppose three bottles of duty free doesn't take up much space in the Y type Bryan

The first time we travelled to France in the YA was via Southampton to St Malo on board the M V Falaise, in those days the car was loaded by crane into the ships hold. The next day we set off across Brittany to Quimper, the roads at that time proved hard going but we made it by early evening.
The next trip to France we flew the car by 'Channel Air Bridge' from Blackbush to Cherbourg and return, I think the aircraft was a old Bristol Freighter which carried about three cars, two barley sugars and we were there,
The YA proved so dependable that in the later years we were confident enough to tow a caravan as far as Venice, it never once let us down even hauling the van over the Alps in temperatures in the high 80's . The long stroke engine proved ideal for towing and on a climb would pull away from each hair pin bend like a tractor. Those Abingdon engineers somehow worked a little magic into the car. Bryan

Bryan,
I admire your efforts back when travel was not so easy. The biggest regret is the closure of the car railways, this surely would be good for longer trip say if wanting to get to Scotland from south coast for trip, could do overnight sleep wake up with the car in Scotland.

Not sure I would want crane lifting my Y's on ferry now. Sure it would be safe, but somehow doesn't feel as good or safe as simply driving up ramp onto ro-ro ferry.

Thanks for your thoughts. The aim was to encourage folk to use their cars and be more adventurous.

2019? well a step into the unknown with the way matters are being dealt with. I just hope it doesnt end with too many uncertainties!

Enjoy the week and hopefully see a few of you at the NEC (11-13 November) @ the Classic Car Show.
Cheers Jerry

We had small local meetup of Y's today for lunch, two YT's and one YB. Great to catch up with some local Y's and their owners

Good stuff Richard which YT is yours? The one with the hood down surely!
J P BIRKBECK

Jerry,
My hood was up, big black cloud, whilst in pub didn't want car getting soaked. As it happens it didn't rain, and 52 miles today was very much driven hood down. Had great fun as the weather was mild, roads dry, but sun look very orange, with hurricane effects.
