MG MG Y Type - Boot Lid Striker Plate

The striker is held by two machine screws (3/8 BSF?). They screw into a metal plate. On my YT the screws continually vibrate loose and I am always tightening them. The screws are not long enough to take a lock nut. Anyone else with this condition or a solution. If only all problems were so minor. Terry

Locktite?

I have had some refitting problems with this plate and the handle/lock which I have only temporarily fixed but the screws coming loose was not one of them.

Firstly are you sure that the screws have good threads and the plate is still well tapped for maximum grip.

Secondly have you determined what is causing the boot area of the body to vibrate other than traveling on the road. Try and cure the problem not the symptoms!

My whole or temporary remedy suggestions are:

1 Glue or blue tack the backing plate to the inside boot rim to see if holding that firm will stop the screws coming loose.

2 Glue the screws in with a mild strength glue so that a sharp twist with a screw driver will release them if need be in the future.

3 Make up a piece of timber to wedge between the backing plate and the back of the boot to hold the plate firm.

Good luck and post your attempts back on the Bulletin Board.

Longer screws and nylok nuts?
Steve Simmons

I certainly would recommend securing the screws in with some sort of glue - rather than experiement with glue you might just give them a light coating of gasket gue (the stuff you smear on the inside of the rocker box lid before turning it upside down to prevent the cork gasket from dropping out). In the UK there are 2 types Hermetite Red and Blue, the red is a non permanent type. I have no idea what the US equivalent is but the screw should hold in place with something like this. Dont overtighten it though as the plate WILL shatter - and there arent many down at NAPA nowerdays. Good luck,

Longer screws with a locktite nut would be the answer. Have a vast assortment of BSF stuff but as ususal do not have the longer screws, Will try some glue of some type. the screws are of course sloted so need something that will hold but break easily. Thanks for all the suggestions. Terry
