MG MG Y Type - Boot/trunk and door locks

OK so it worked for Mike - I wonder if it will for me too? I'll ask the question, then go to bed!

Right, I have a quantity of door and boot locks but no keys. How do I find out what key number they take? Once I know that, I can order keys!

Thanks

Paul

Paul.
On the boot lock, the key number should be stamped into the square turn shaft. You may have to carefully dismantle it if the number is hidden by the rear cover on the lock mechanism..
Not sure if the same applies to the front o/s door lock.
Hope this helps.

Thanks - that is an amazing piece of info! It works with the boot lock I have in front of me - will check out my other ones too for a number and then look at all my door locks.

The boot lock says simply '46' so is that pressumably an FP46 key? My key for my YA is an FPxxx (where xxx is the actual number!!) so is three digits, or is there a bit under the round boss - if so, how do you get that off (and back on again) please?

Paul - Try the keys to your other cars. Most of the locks are so worn that just about any keey that will go into them will work to open them. Once opened with a key most of the barrels can be removed and if nothing else, taken to a local locksmith to have a key made. Dave

Paul.
My boot/trunk key is an MRN 38, so yours could be MRN 46. My door lock is an FS number

Tried that Dave - no joy!

However, I think Keith has the answer so now to go and see what else I have before making enquiries about keys!!

Thanks everyone.

Paul, I only had an ignition key for my YB when I acquired it, the boot and driver door both being different. I removed the lock barrel itself and took it to the MG Autojumble at Stoneleigh where there is usually a key expert & seller. He looked at mine, tried a master of some sort and then said which key would fit it, and it did. It is true that the locks may be so worn that several keys may fit which makes it easier but there is little security. There might be an Autojumble nearer than Stoneleigh!

There used to be someone advertising in Safety Fast (Yeah I know - there used to be a lot of people advertising in Safety Fast) and in the Octogon Bulletin, I will see if he can help to start with.

If the boot key was MRN what was the door key series as they too have a 2 digit stamping?

Thanks
