MG MG Y Type - Brake cylinder Spring Crowns

Greetings all,
The restoration of UMG 284 is slowly ramping up. Can anyone advise me where I can obtain the Spring Crowns for the brake cylinders. 2 each cylinder.
These are numbered 37 in section L-12 of the maintenance manual.

Many Thanks
Alan

Hi Alan

NTG sell wheel cylinder repair kits K187R for the rear and K187P for the fronts. The spreaders are part of the kit and are not available seperately.

Paul,
Thanks for the swift reply.
Unfortunately I have already purchased cylinder repair kits from another source which only included the rubber cups and boots. If the spring crowns are unavailable separately it looks like I will have to bite the bullet and purchase addtional kits from NTG.

Yep - sorry about that Alan. You might want to call NTG first and double check they include the crown/spreaders. They should from memory I think.

Also, once you have them coming to you, you might as well send the others back where they came from as they arent much good without the spreaders. If you get a refund, all well and good, but if not, at least you dont have to throw them away yourself!

Good luck and happy hunting.

Hi Alan

A oouple of cheaper sources are Past Parts in Bury St Edmunds - www.pastparts.co.uk and MG Octagon Car Club.
Unlike NTG thay can provide the parts separately and not as part of a kit.

Past Parts provided me with a set of new spreaders as did Octagon and they wereboth quite willing to provide them separately. i bought a set of spreaders (Part No PPL 17-7261)from PP on 1st Dec 2009 for £2.00 each + VAT and also 2 Crown Washers 1 1/8" Part No SBR101 for £1.60 a pair from MG Octagon CC. Their phone number is 01889 574666. If you are not a member you will pay about 10% extra. You can source the info on their web site - just google in mg octagon car club and follow the spares tab. I dont know what NTG charge for brake cyilnder kit but MG Octagon provide them for £3.50 a set + delivery and VAT. The part no is SBR011 for a front brake kit for a YA/YT.

I have acquired parts form both of these suppliers. They are cheaper than NTG. If you need to have your brake cylinders and master cylinder fitted with stainless steel inserts then try Past Parts. They have a good service and cost around £40 a cylinder (that was last year so they well have increased in price).

Hope this helps.

Sincerely

Paul, Jerry,

Many thanks for the information. I will certainly be contacting these suppliers as I'm finding NTG a little expensive.
This past week I have acquired another YA (parts car only, someone was attempting to make it into a coupe before realising the body was too far gone)from which I might be lucky and acquire the spring crowns. I haven't had time to check out the cylinders yet.

Best Regards
Alan

Can you please complete a registration form for your new acquisition (see Registration, and Register Your Y at www.mgytypes.org) for me please?

Also, please can you drop me an email too as I have someone in Australia who is in need of a complete sunroof and the bits that go into the roof panel too. I will put the two of you in touch.

Many thanks

Paul

Paul,

I'll be away from access to the vehicle until late next month due to a business trip but will certainly log all the available information when I can.
I did take a couple of numbers down from the bulkhead:
1.25 MG 1136
No. 1136 Z8693
I believe the colour was green. Possibly two tone.

The old bumper has the UK reg DPN 915 hanging from it.

The owner tells me he has the original log book stashed somewhere which will hopefully turn up.

I'm afraid until I have UMG284 up and running all the spare parts will need to be kept. From memory the sunroof is in poor shape as is most of the body tub.
