MG MG Y Type - Brake Pressure Switch

Whilst replacing front brake hoses (per separate thread), I took the opportunity to install a brake pressure switch per the attached pic. I modified the brake 3 way union located to the rear of the master cylinder by drilling and tapping the plain mounting hole (1/8 BSPT), drilling the port through into the tapped hole, and installing and soldering brass plugs to block the open threaded holes. Not connected yet, but hopefully more reliable than the mechanical switch. Thanks, Ewan

Looks good Ewan- Bit worried about soldered plugs in the brake system though--Whereabouts are they, can't see them in the picture. Solid plugs would be the go-

Hi Willy,

The plugs are threaded into (a) the opposite end of the pressure switch (top of fitting in the pic) and (b) the 3/8 BSF threaded hole perpendicular to the pressure switch (back of fitting in the pic). The threaded plugs are then sealed by wicking in solder ie as per a plumbing joint. Regards, Ewan

Cheers Ewan, should be a nice conversion-
My bad---When I first read it i thought you had soldered up the holes in tubular brake pipe nuts and was a bit worried for your safety, but I understand what you've done now ---all good, a lot easier to get to than the other switch
Cheers

As a matter of interest Evan, now that you are using the original mounting for the switch how are you mounting the union now?

Hi Ian, Good question! On my car, there was no bracket or other fixture mounting the union to the chassis, so that's how it kept it. It was just held in place by the 3 brake pipes attached to it. To be honest I haven't checked whether this is correct or not - although I have noted that the other applications for this union on the front cross member and rear axle both utilise the mounting hole. Ewan, I will try to remember to crawl under my car to find out how my brake union is mounted. I have a hydraulic brake switch fitted but as far as I remember it is directly mounted on the master cylinder.

Hi All, here is a pic of an unrestored chassis showing that there is no attachment to the chassis for this particular union. Ewan

Nice conversion Ewan . Mine was/is fitted at the end of the master cylinder , looks the same as yours but you dont have the slight brake fluid drip that I have !!!!! Bugger..... John B
