MG MG Y Type - Bringing a YT back to life

Hi. A good friend here in the states has a RHD 1949 YT that has been in his garage for about 10 years without running (it was running when he parked it). He has asked me to get it on the road again for him.

I a very comfortable with TD motors, so don't anticipate any issues in getting the motor running. This will include:

All fluid/filter change, clean the float bowls, flush out the needle valve, change hoses, belts, fog oil the cylinders prior to turning it over with the crank. Check that all valves are moving, coat the valve train with oil. Inspect the distributor springs and weights. Inspect the points and set if in good condition. Static time the engine, check electrical connections to assure good continuity.

Drain the fuel tank, flush the tank and fuel lines, check screen in the fuel pump. Check that the points in the pump are free.

Brakes will get a full going over.

Any other issues that the YT might have that I need to look at? It has a jacking system on it, is there anything I need to do to check this system?

When you give the brakes that going over, check the hydraulic pipes, they do tend to perish.
There is an extensive information page about The Jackall system at:
http://www.mgccyregister.co.uk/technical-information/servicing-2/jackall-repairs/
I hope that helps.

Hi Bruce

Lots more information too on http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/jackall.shtml for the Jackall system.

Be aware that the MG Y and YT master cylinder is unique to the Y and YT - master cylinder upgrades/rebuilds available from C&C Parts - see http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/links.shtml#Brake%20%20/%20Friction%20Systems.

Rear wheel cylinders are MG TC Front ones.

Front Wheel cylinders are Morris 10 Series M, 12 Series III; Hindustan 10hp; Wolseley 10,10 Series III, 12 Series III (rear), 12/48 Series III (rear), 14/60 (rear), 14 Series III (rear).

Check for water pump free play and bearings, and same for oil pump play. Also be careful of oil pressures too.

Might be worth checking and changing the rear axle oil too.

Hand brake/parking brake cables.

Thanks Paul and Robert. The brake information will be very helpful. I will also read the information on the Jackall.

Thanks All. Glad I asked about the brakes. With the likelihood I will need brake rubber parts, What is the availability of the brake parts? MG TC should be easy, but what about the master and the fronts?
Bruce TD4139 Cunha

All of the brake parts are available Bruce. Best one stop shop for USA and Canada customers is NTG Motor Services (http://www.ngbits.com). They provide a good export service.

A useful reference for you will be the Alternate Parts List that you can exclusively download for free from the International MG Y Type Register website at http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/pdf/altparts.pdf if you have not found it yet.

Other interesting reading for you in putting the YT back into commission will be the CD book Let there be Ys (and other useful CDs) that you can buy at http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/stores/yzpublications.shtml.

Have you/the owner registered your/his YT with us at http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/registeryoury.shtml?

Paul's tip about NTG is very good advice, they have been an absolute godsend for parts and advice. They talked me through a fuel pump problem, whereby the diaphragm was sticking, something that I wouldn't have investigated, they were so helpful. It might be an idea to see if they are on Skype, that would keep your call charges low.

Thanks Paul. I doubt that the car has been regestered with the YT registry. I know it was imported from Morocco by a US soldier. OUr friend bought it about 30 years ago.

I will post the ID number once I get back down and get the car un-buried from all the stuff around it in the garage.

The oddity that you pointed out on this YT is that someone in the past converted it to a single carb YB type setup. I did find a second carb, but it is in pretty poor shape. If I convince the owner to put it back to two carbs (hoping I can), I may need your assistance in locating a manifold.

I will use the conversion chart that you directed me to.

Hi Bruce

Reinstating it to twin carbs will be really easy. You will just need an MG TD inlet manifold and air cleaner assembly. The YT air cleaner is a bit taller than the TD one but the TD set up will work. You will also need an MG TD linkage for the choke and the carbs for the accelerator but we can walk through all of that when you are ready.

Just a note. The Y/T air cleaner is exactly the same as the TD air cleaner. However, on the Y/T the air cleaner sits on top of a large silencer, which the TD does not have, as there is not enough room below the bonnet cover for it. That is why the Y/T unit looks larger than that of the TD.

Have to sort through all the parts I found for this car, I know there is another carb and some linkage.

Is the YT carb the same as the TD? I have a few extra TD carburetors so if they are the same, I should have all the parts build the second one. TD intake should not be too hard to find.

Still trying to figure why someone would have converted it to a single carb. intake and air cleaner manifold and the air cleaner would have had to have been changed. It was pointed out that those are not MG manifold hold downs.

Here is a picture I took about a year ago of the carb side of the motor.

The twin carbs were likely "salvaged" for another XPAG application. It happens a lot.

The manifold clamps for single carb manifold are different to twin carb manifold clamps.

A well tuned single carb is only lacking in the top of the rev range when compared to twins.

Good Luck
