MG MG Y Type - Broken seat frame

My front seat frame drivers has broken in at least two places....over the years I have kept it going but it urgently needs repairs. The leather is OK-the base needs new springs as the old ones are flat. Any ideas as to the best place to send it to and likely cost. At the moment I have swapped the passenger seat over. Running a YB daily certainly shows up weak points.

Depends where its broken, on my frame the brake was on straight sections one at a hold down bolt hole so a short bar of about 3" or 8cm length of almost the same internal diameter was slid into the frame and in my case was silver soldered into place or a couple of nuts and bolts drilled through either side will do, counter sink heads can be less obtrusive. I found a simple weld just gave up again in time.

Thanks Bryan - if all else fails I will have a go. Any ideas from owners who have had their seat frames done by a specialist?

Dave,

Where are yours broken?

I have dismantled my seats, reshaped the distorted lower frames, had extra welds where the legs meet the square frame, removed the metal back panels and replaced the loose rivets with bolts. The coil springs seemed ok so I painted them and refitted them. I have recently taken them to a trimmer as I cant do the leather work myself.

I have a spare lower frame minus springs which you are welcome to.

I also have another complete seat with trimmed back but no cushion. This is currently with the trimmer as he is using it as a pattern to ensure he gets the 'horseshoe padding' as per original.

He estimates the seats will be done by end of January...if you can wait that long you can have that seat frame too.

They are 'handed' but if they're the wrong ones you just need to drill additional holes for the sliding adjustment mechanism.

I have lots of pics I could send you, they all need resizing to post here!

Rob can you e mail me off the BBS and will discuss. Many thanks. I did have your contact details as you may recall but I changed my mobile and lost some contact details.

Rob,

Rather than post photos on BBS why not submit an article to IMGYTR, we can all refer back as and when advice may be needed on the subject in the future.
Amazing the amount of info that exists for our Y Types
