MG MG Y Type - Bumper bar dimensions

Can anybody tell me the dimensions of a Y bumper bar please?

A couple of years back I bought a Morris Z van in bits which included two bumper bars which look like Y bars. They have just three bolt holes, one in the centre and the other two holes are 535 mm each side of the centre hole.

The bumpers are 60 mm wide, 1333 mm long, 48 mm curve in the centre (measured from the inside of the curve to a flat between the end points of the bumper.) There are two smaller holes 330 mm apart in one edge of the bumper, presumably to mount a number plate.

I have checked the diagrams in LTBYs, but those diagrams aren't dimensioned.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi,
A YB bumper from end to end measured across the back from end to end is 1360mm. the depth again at the back is 72mm, and there are 5 holes across the length of the bumper not counting the n/plate small holes.

also the curve along most of the bumper is slight and only when you reach the ends does it become prenounced. this was left behind when i tryed to edit!!

Thanks John, I should have been a little clearer - my car is a Y(A) which I think had a different bumper, primarily no overriders, therefore two less bolt holes.

LTBYs shows different drawings for the Y, and for YT and YB models. Neither set of drawings is dimensioned. I don't know whether there's any difference between front and rear bumpers.

The bumpers for my car were missing when I bought it - I couldn't find the right ones so fitted TD or TF bumpers, which I was able to source locally new from a small wholesaler who seemed to have forgotten they had them! I have installed 'dummy' bolts to fill in the extra holes and screwed my number plates over the crank handle hole.

If the bars that came with the Morris van are correct for the Y(A) I will fit them to my car in the interests of enhanced originality.

Thanks again,

Neil

Hi Neil, You are on the right track I think. The bumper blades are the same front and rear, but the support irons behind the blades are different.

It was my understanding that only the YT had over-riders from the factory (so 5 holes in blade), but I have seen quite a lot of YA's with them too. These may have been fitted by owners after purchase, or fitted by dealers/factory at purchasers request - who really knows.

The two holes in the bottom edge are most certainly for the number plate mounting brackets - there is a drawing of these brackets on the IMGYTR website. A handy chap like you should be able to whip up a pair in no time.

I hope to be in the shed later today to get some dimensions/photos for you. No promises though.

There are some spare irons in the shed too if you are interested, but no spare straight blades that I recall.

Happy Y-Typing,

Thanks Tony, the bars came with irons but once again, I don't know whether they are Y Type. They look like it but without dimensions I can' be sure.

I wonder if these may be Morris 8 Series E bumpers - as we all know, the Y is based on the humble Series E. Do you know if Series E and Y bumpers are the same? My friend has a very original Series E - I might go see him with bars in hand over the weekend, to compare.

Not too fussed about replacing the ones on my car - they look fine and besides, it's never going to be judged by anybody. I made bumper irons to suit them and they also look the part. But as you know I like my cars to be as original as possible, just for fun.

Best wishes for the upcoming 70th rally - sorry I can't be there but it's a bit far for this old bloke and his old car. Rest assured I will have a glas of red to celebrate the event - it gives me a darned good excuse!
