MG MG Y Type - captured nuts above windscreen on YA

Hi Everyone
Am getting close to fitting the new roof lining so was just checking around the edges to see all was well.
Above the windscreen on the inside there is an inner panel and in this inner panel are two captured nuts about 3"apart,and perhaps 3/16 dia, each side of the car. they are further into the curve of the roof and to the side of the sun visor mountings. In effect they are about 2" behind the roof lining .
Now i dont remember removing anything from them .but it was a long time ago !
So does anybody have any idea what they are for ?
Cant imagine what they are fo but dont want to put roof lining in and bury them only to find i need access to them .
Many thanks as always

John,
I am in the process of installing new headlining on YB0952. Unfortunately, I have already installed the cloth over the area above the windshield. I do not recall seeing captive nuts in the area you describe. Nor can I recall anything being attached through the cloth in that position.
Can you provide a photo of the area in question?

Thanks FT the second photo is the best to show them but a bit far away . I have tried but the flash has gone on strike on my phone !!
Look at the drivers side and you will see the two bolts that hold the windscreen hinge. Just above them the inner skin folds horizontal and there are two captured nuts in this little horizontal piece. You have to look up to see them . Its the same passenger side .
I wonder if they used the inner panel on another model and these were the visor mountings? Cant imagine what else they could be for and I cant find anything in my boxes that came from there and have no recollection of removing anything . But that doesn't mean I didn't !!

Cheers

Not sure guys but I think you will find that if there are 4 of them in total in 2 pairs of 2 they are for the screws for the sun visor brackets.

Don't worry about covering them up with the headliner as when you are going to install the brackets you can puncture the cloth with a bradawl tool and then enlarge it slightly so that the screw does not snatch up the headliner.

Paul

PS I presume you all have a copy of Jack Murray's wonderful book on fitting a headliner - see https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/bookreview.shtml#Data_Sheets_and_Other_Publications for details of this book.

Sometimes it helps to have a few bits of scrap metal in the garden when there are tricky questions to be answered.

I have circled the two captive nuts that are the subject of this question.

They are not used in the completed car. They are "assembly mounts" to align the inner roof panel while the outer panel and A-pillars are welded in place.

As you can imagine, the accurate location of the adjacent windscreen mounts would be critical in ensuring the opening windscreens fit every body shell.

There would have been an assembly jig that mounted on these screws that defined the exact shape and dimensions of the windscreen opening.

I will get my hat - cheerio....

Brilliant Tony you've got them . Thank you for that I can proceed with the roof lining happily .
There can't be many times you use the words critical and accurate in a sentence about Y types !!
Thanks guys onwards and upwards
