MG MG Y Type - Choke Cable - YT

Can anyone please confirm the correct length of the choke cable as fitted to the YT. I need both the inner wire length and the sleeve length.

I would also like to confirm to which carb the choke cable is directly connected - front or rear ?.

I have had a look around the Y website, but there are pictures of both carbs being connected to the cable !.

The correct length will be one that reaches. Might sound obvious, but there probably wasnt a definative length of xft and yinches. The cable should reach easily to the desired connection, with no abrupt or sharp turn, flowing smothly and not fouling any electrical connections.

As to which carb - I think without doubt it would have been the rear carb. However, as with the YA/B vapor lock is a real problem. To overcome this, both David Pelham and I have fitted a TD heat shield (available from Brown and Gammon - Moss do not seem to carry one), and we have also both fitted isolation blocks from a modern MG/AH Spridget. You will also need longer bolts which are available from David Pelham.

When you fit this arrangement, the rear carb choke lever would then foul on the steering column. To get around this, you would need to dismantle the cable holding clamp lever and move it to the front carb and reverse the linkage so that the front carb now operates the rear. For this you will need the longer length cable. I recently fitted this arrangement to another YT and did the measurement by eyeometer measurement.

I know this doesnt directly answer your question, but I dont think anyone will deduct points from you at a concourse.

Thanks Paul, that was my plan but I just thought I would ask the question in case someone had been there before.

Now for another related question - was the choke knob round or octagonal like the saloons and did it have the word "CHOKE" engraved on the surface.

Any idea on the diameter of the wire in the choke cable - would 1.0mm be enough ?

You see I have a box full of Y choke cables - saloon and tourers from various cars and not many are the same - so which one is my dilemma ?

Hey Tony

This is easier than the first one - LOL!!

They were round on the Tourer, like on the TC/TD. Octagonal on the YA/B. Both knobs were plain with no inscription. Check Let there be Ys but on the Tourer right hand drive (and maybe lefts too) the choke was the left of the two cables on the dash panel, the starter being on the right.

On the LHD YT the choke and starter are reversed, starter to the left choke to the right. Many years ago I needed a new cable, think it was the choke and one from a TD or TC was used and has worked well since. Terry

Just for the record: I hold an original pair of carbs in hands and the lenght of the outer sleeve is 13,5 inches, whereas the inner cable's lenght is 21,5 inches. The diameter of the (single strand) cable is aprrox. 1.25 mm.
