MG MG Y Type - Clipper Blue

I am getting my YT painted in a few weeks time. The colour clipper blue is listed as BU14 but this colour is different to some cars that claim to be clipper blue. Tony has a YT door with a lighter blue on the woodwork and under the handle than the BU14 colour. One website puts BU14 starting in 1958 Has anyone a photo of the 1950 clipper blue??. The wife like Tony,s blue so it might be a good idea to uses that one.....

Bob, have you checked the TD-TF board archives. There is plenty of discussion on Clipper Blue and some photos of TDs and TCs.
One thread says
PPG code of 12297. (and)
Just discovered some cross-references that I put together in 1994 for Clipper Blue:
DP 25888 (DuPont)
M/S 25286 (Martin-Senour)

cheers

Gidday Bob,
Take this to the local PPG paint supplier and see if the formula is still available. Get a sample made up and spray a "test panel" for spousal approval.

If the colour does not look right or gain approval, you might have to find a suitable colour chip and get a formula made to duplicate it by computer scanning.

Good Luck

Tony

This is Tony's blue.

This is a tin of BU14 mixed last week. The paint chart I found online said this colour started in 1958. The two colours are chalk and cheese.

Bob, I agree the inside door colour is way different to Tony's photos.
I just checked on the "Original MGTD Midget" website Finishes page and the original BMC sample ICI paint colour card for Clipper Blue shows the same colour as your inside door colour.

A check of Mini websites etc does not list BU 14, only BU 12 which is similar to your inside door colour.

As there is so many TDs and Ys with the lighter (as per Tony's colour), there must be a formula around.

keep looking and good luck

Bob,
There is a Clipper Blue MG TC on the Gold Coast. I have asked the owner if you can visit the car with some colour chips to get a match.

I will contact you by phone when I get a reply.

Cheers

This pic has been in the poolroom for years - I wonder what blue it is? Lovely picture, anyway.

Chris Constantine allowed me to place the pic of his car here, Clipper Blue , Tony S will know that when all my rust removal is done on the YT we will have two clipper blues matching down here in Vic.
I have taken a swatch from Chris’s to match.
Tony when you can get down here you will be welcome at Kimber’s Kastle.

I have been doing some research on clipper blue, Tony put me onto a TC owner with a clipper blue car that is said to be the correct colour. Today I got the colour match done at the paint shop on the battery box lid...the result was a Citroen blue AC639/enc /gna so to check a 100 ml mix was made, the match was exactly the came as the lid.. Thank Tony and I hope it helps any other MG owner trying to paint the car blue. BU14 is a lot darker BOB
