I know this gentleman is not based in the UK but he does excellent work and only $75 (plus shipping and insurance) and is highly recommended. As soon as I can get to it I am going to strip out the clocks out of my MG Y, Y/T and ZA and send him all 3.

Wow - the other recommended place for this work is 99 British Pounds plus a fair bit for postage - $200 Aussie dollars. It's hard to go past $85 including poatage! I wonder whether there is a material difference in quality of workmanship/materials used?
Yours, John.

From what I have heard of this gentleman's reputation I am pleased to say you will get a very good 'bang for your buck'.

I am also an owner of an MG ZA and belong to a group here in the US and quite a few of our members were extolling the wonderful work he has done on their clocks. While ours are different, they are also similar and he is confident he can do a good job on Y clocks too as they have similar mechanisms. I would not recommend him otherwise!

What is a clock motor? The term gives the impression that the car's clock has a separate motor. The clock in my car works but stops when the car's switched off. All my electrics stop when I remove the car's isolator, it's not only a handy anti-theft security device, it also stops the battery from going flat if a switch has been inadvertently left on.

If the car hasn't been used for a good while, is it possible for the clock to drain the battery?

There is a guy in Redditch, Worcestershire whom I am sure can repair your clock. When I can find his details I'll post them. Another chap who repairs speedo and rev counters is also someone I have used.

It might be worthwhile attending the MG & Triumph Day at Stoneleigh on Sunday 19th February. Its a really good event and well worth the visit. I'll be on the Octagon stand in the second hall our spares stand is in the main hall. I'll be in a TC rather than the YT but look forward to chatting with any Y owner!

When I find the contact details for the clock repairers then I'll post them.

All the best

John Ostick - please see my website at www.jdo1.com or you can contact me at john_ostick@hotmail.com

I have used John to repair both the clock and speedometer from my YB . They had been contaminated with oil climbing from the gearbox .

Hi Jerry

JR Dennis is in Queensland so I doubt he will be going to Stoneleigh but thanks for the suggestion.

Paul - do you know where in Queensland JRDennis is ?? - is he on holiday, and can he be contacted? - I'm up near Cairns (Great Barrier Reef, etc), Tony Slattery is down south ... It would be cool to meet up for a chinwag if it were do-able. Yours, John.

Are you sure that JR Dennis is in Quensland Paul?
His address is shown as South Yorkshire, United Kingdom and his phone number in a UK number. Or is that an alias!

Cheers

Ahh looks like I missread the note! So he is a Brit working/on holiday in Oz? Is this correct? Thanks Jerry

Yeah my bad - mixed up JR ... and JP ... LOL.

Notwithstanding the site I gave in the US at $75 plus shipping I think will be hard to beat in any country though!

Thank you for pointing that out!

I had my Y type Smiths Clock converted and repaired by Mike Eck www.jaguarclock.com. He did a great job, turn around in approx three weeks. As Paul mentioned Mike has a good reputation for repairing and converting Smiths Clocks. I can actually hear the clock ticking! I paid $75 US plus $10 shipping. A good result

That's good enough for me, Mel - my Y and TD clocks will be on the way to Mike Eck on Monday!
JR Dennis - if nothing else turns up, I might have a spare Y clock with blown solenoid; if a mate in Melbourne doesn't want it, its yours. Regards, John.

Hi, I would like to live up again the clock of my YA, so I wonder if anybody has experience with the repair kit from "clocks4classics.com", either by doing it himself or sending in the clock for repair ?

Thanks for your feedback

Hi,
This is not quite an independent view as my brother runs clocks4classics and developed the repair kit. A lot of kits have now been sold and I believe the system has proved to be very reliable and has also been refined over the years. I don't have one in my YB at the moment, but my car has been used to test some recent refinements of the kit, to ensure that the electrical systems in the car do not upset the clock electronics (they didn't). My father has had one of the kits fitted to his MG Magnette for many years without any problems. The nice thing about the kit is that the clock looks and sounds no different to the original, but will run more reliably.
Cheers
