MG MG Y Type - Core Plug

Having investigated a coolant leak I have found that that the core plug at the rear and near the bulk head is leaking .
What a awkward place !!
So would appreciate suggestions as to repair .
Or will it be the engine out to get access to the core plug .
And I'm also wondering about the availability of correct size core plugs .
Thanks ,

Ed Obtaining the core plug wont be a problem , Octagon for one have them.
Is the core plug rusted through or is it seeping at the edge . If its just seeping you could try cleaning it off ,getting it dry and perhaps a dab of araldite or similar.
If its rusted through then it may be worth replacing them all which includes the one behind the flywheel - yup engine out . Otherwise you might manage by jacking the engine up but I am not sure if that will give you clearance with it being the rear one .
Anybody done it ?

Engine out is the easiest ... and yes replace them all at the same time. See also https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/technical.shtml#Core_plug_removal_and_refitting

The general advice would be to take out engine to replace all the core plugs and so I ‘ll go ahead with this .
With the engine out what other jobs should I get done .
Thanks

Ed,
atCheck the crankshaft oil seals ,but dont expect them to be dry , similarly the gearbox oil seals . There is a core plug in the rear of the block dont forget to change it ,you will need to remove the clutch and flywheel to get at it .so check your clutch plates Also there is a small bush in the end of the crankshaft check that if you decide to replace it soak the new bush for 24hours in engine oil. check the camshaft chest cover in fact check everything its all easier with the engine out and dont forget the XPAG is incontinent at best!
Have fun

To replace core plug to rear of XPAG the engine needs to be removed .This is no easy job so I got help from a retired mechanic with experience of classic cars and use of his fully equipped garage .Also helping was colleague whose hobby is working at classic cars . My hobby is driving classic cars .
Bonnet removed ,headlights then radiator with grill ,exhaust disconnected and carbs with manifold removed. All connections to dynamo ,coil etc disconnected .
Obvious that engine could not be removed without first disconnecting gearbox .
Interior of car stripped out and floor lifted .
Car up on lift and gearbox disconnected and lifted into cabin .
Engine out using hoist with great care .
Engine out and all core plugs replaced and these most certainly needed .Engine cleaned and painted .
Engine back into car and reconnected to gearbox .Difficult and heavy work .
Reassemble .Studs on manifold needed replaced .Water pump and pulley needed replaced .This was tricky in that when assembled would not turn and solution was to put washer on pump shaft .
All work was carried out slowly and with great care to make sure everything done correctly .
A difficult but worthwhile job to YB1041 .

Your mate whose hobby is working on classic cars seems a handy fellow. Can he pop over to England and do mine for me too?
