MG MG Y Type - Curb Weight

Sorry if this has come up before but is the "curb weight" of a Y-type the same as the "complete car" weight listed in the tech spec - i.e. 991kg for a YA and 933.5kg for a YT?
Or does a bit need to be added to allow for fluids etc?

Cheers,
Saul.

My YA has 1000 kg on it's (Dutch) registration papers, so I think some fluid weight (and toolbox!) has to be added.

Curb weight includes fluids.

Does anyone have any accurate figures?
Or even sensible estimates?
I am personally interested in YT curb weight, but I imagine the difference between the "curb" and "car" weight for YT will be the same as that for YA.

1000kg is probably pretty close for a YA so I would guess a YT would come in about 950kg.

Any advances?

Cheers,
Saul.

Hi Saul,

If we refer to 'Blower' he records the 'Complete car weight' which is explained as "includes water and oils but not fuel"

On this basis the weights are
YT - 18cwt 3qrs 20lbs
YA - 19cwt 2qrs 0lbs

Does that help? I suppose it depends on how old you are!

If you want it in French
YT - 961.615kg
YA - 990.645kg

If you want to add a full tank of fuel
8 gallons = 36.36 litres = 26.54kg

Thanks Rob.
You are absolutely right with your figures.
I was slightly thrown at first by a mistake on the tech data for the YT on Paul's site which is probably just a repeat of a mistake in the original manual (which I don't have to hand right now) where it says:

Complete car 18 cwt. 3 qr. (933.5 kg.).

Should read 962kg (or 961.5kg).

So YT Curb Weight is about 988kg.
Which is as close to 1000kg as makes no difference (especially with all the junk in my boot and all the grime on the underside).

Cheers,
Saul.

Hi Saul

No mistake on my part - this is per the original Workshop Manual I used! It is a typo in the original manuscript.

Interestingly enough though (since I cross checked against the "YT Supplement to the Owners Manual" aka handbook, this still says 18cwt 3qr but converted it to kg at 958kg! I have now added a short paragraph to the web page to mention that.

One of the biggest problems I encounter, when reprinting stuff is when I come across stuff that I know is patently incorrect. Do I reprint it as true reprint? Or should I correct it? I have always taken the view that a reprint should be exactly that - a reprint ... warts and all. Hence the disclaimer! This often comes up especially with the reprinted magazine articles. I think I am right to do that!

So not so much "Maintaining the Breed" as "Perpetuating the Myth" I guess.

Sorry if you were 'slightly thrown' - apparently there is a telephone number on the Original Workshop Manual for you though Saul - Abingdon 251 - you can try (heavy wink!!)

Cheers

I think it is in the K-Magnette documentation that the MG factory deliberately put in the wrong capacity or wrong bore/stroke combination to disguise the fact that the engine was a souped up Wolseley unit.

Why they would convert the weight wrong is beyond me.

Human error?
