MG MG Y Type - Cylinder Head Identification

Instead of a casting number does the head of my Y/T show a "punched" identification code: AEF 118
Does anyone please know what this means and where it originates?

Thank you

Have a read of the TD thread "Engine ID Plate", started by D Lamb and last updated 12 April, in which there is discussion about IDing the XPEG 1500 engine block and head.

Please let me have the complete link to D Lamb's TD thread.

Am I in trouble deep, trying to use a XPEG head on a XPAG block?

It was some 18 years back, in the dark pre-internet times that I bought this head for its larger valves and overhauled and "lead freed" it.
The identification code was painted over and I thought that this is a TF 1250 head with its casted ID number ground off....

The thread is current and easy to find on the TD-TF board, about 20 down from the top. Select "Subject" in the top menu, then T Series TD-TF in the subject list.

I am no expert on the XPEG and XPAG blocks, but I believe the XPEG head will match one of the XPAG blocks (not sure if it is the round or oval water hole one). I suggest you search the TD-TF thread and archives as it has been discussed many times over the years.

Due to the number and expertise of those on the TD-TF board, I would use that board for any questions you have concerning the mechanics on the Y.

I disagree with you there completely. The assistance in ALL areas of MG Y are ably met on this BBS. The TABC and the TD/TF forums are useful secondary conduits but there is always a plethora of information on all aspects on this board. Indeed the matter of cylinder heads in particular is well served in the archives of the Y Type BBS. Your comment above is not truly representative at all and you have received much assistance over the years through this BBS from many quarters too on many different topics I recall. Your comment is perceived, at least by me, as a little disingenuous.

I apologise if I have offended anyone. I have only owned my YT for a year and been asking questions on Y Board for that time, whereas I have had my TD for some 40+ years and been using the TD-TF since 2009. The TD is still being restored.

My reasoning for buying the YT was that it had similar mechanics to the TD and therefore I would only need one spare engine and associated parts.

The advice I have received from Y owners has been much appreciated, as it has made the work in getting the YT going much easier. I hope to get it roadworthy in the next 2 weeks, so I have time to run it in before the 70th Anniv. (I have not registered as yet, as I want to ensure the YT is going / drivable to the Sunny Coast before doing so.)

A very interesting thread. We certainly are blessed with some very knowledgeable Y experts who are prepared to share there experience when asked on this blog. However I can see Stuart's point in that the number of Y owners is counted in hundreds, where as T Types are in many thousands and the expertise must correlate in some way. When asking advise on a thread such as this, any answers must always be carefully considered, as there source can be unknown and unproven. I have often seen an enthusiastic educated guess for an answer. Which can be helpful but also dangerous. I have also seen answers that I consider to be wrong or misleading but have not quite had the confidence to challenge them. Some questions have been asked many times before and I would suggest that a bit more time spent studying LTBYs, manuals, and archive answers is time very well spent and very educational.
Whilst on this subject can I also point out that the Octagon Car Club has recently changed its approach to answering technical questions. Their snail mail approach has been abandoned and they now have a team of experts for each category of pre 56 MGs who will answer questions directly by email, they are then published in subsequent editions of the Bulletin.

Peter,
You make a very worthwhile point of view, in addition there is also often more than one approach in how to tackle a job, often two different ways both leading to same outcome.
Happy Y tYping in whatever way.

Dear all

Thank you for all your comments. I found out that the AFE 118 head can be use with the 1250 XPAG block. This makes me happy sinceI would have hated having to overhaul another head...

And best of all, I managed to start and run the supercharged engine over Easter - quite a high light after working on the beast since 1982.

Greetings from Switzerland
