MG MG Y Type - Dash board

My two-tone green YB has gone in for a respray, but the inevitable has happened as it was last painted in 1983, the list of work required has grown. It was in a minor accident in 1966 where the first owner's wife was driving; she bashed her right knee on the dash. This broke the dash board around the steering wheel area. As the car is now getting a Grade One paint job and body repair, I'm on the lookout for a decent dash, not the whole thing as the glove cupboard and the instrument panels are good. Anyone got the panel without those bits? I want one that can be easily varnished and unbroken. You can contact me by email.

Once my poor YB is finished I intend to send Paul Barrow lots of photos about the work done on it, but that will be about June (hopefully) time.

Neil,

If the damage is restricted to a small area it shouldn't be to hard to let in some new multiplex to repair is. The veneer can be reglued and a mixture of laquer and wooddust makes an excellent "filler" for the crack in the veneer. Maybe you can remember that I posted my pictures of my dashboard refinishing:

Also (if it helps) the reprinted article from Safety Fast June 1997 covers reveneering the dash board - see Reprints and Collectibles, then Safety Fast Newsletters at www.mgytypes.org ... or you could ask David Hague as he wrote the article!

Good luck,

If you decide to construct or repair the dash board and need high quality ply wood contact the Popular Flying Association for a list of suppliers [I once had a grand idea of building a neat little two seater aircraft but gave up after two years - life isn't long enough]. I made my dash at night school which took most of two terms. Now I need to find a good veneer and french polisher to complete.
While on the subject of interior restoration, can you recommend a good trimmer in the S West, the whole of the interior of MNU 299 is in need of restoring.
By the way I suppose you already know that fibraglass resin bonds excellently with wood, shape it up and slap a veneer on it and no one could tell the difference - and its waterproof

Hi Neil

I think I may have one or two of the dash 'base units' into which the instrument set and glove box are fixed.

When I get into the right place later this week I'll try and send you a photo off line in case you'd be interested

Stay warm

Thanks Andrew.

The current dash is broken and repaired with metal behind it. I know it will fall to bits on the driver's side so hence the request for a decent replacement. I did re-veneer the windscreen bits and the top of the dash twelve years ago and that is still OK.
