MG MG Y Type - Dick Jacobs Special SHK7

Dick Jacobs built a Y type sports special in 1951 with a supercharged short stroke XPAG using a factory supplied chassis with Y type front end and a special rear suspension.

It was registered SHK 7 and he used it for about one year.

What happened to the car and is it still in the UK?

SHK 7 is no longer recorded on the UK DVLA website as allocated to an MG.

Do you have any pictures you can share with us of it under construction please?

I have just had a quick look in the book An MG Experience by Dick Jacobs. He refers to YB 0414 - UHK 111 which is still alive and well and operating in the UK, YB 1551 (the chassis is the last MG YB chassis ever and was given to Dick by Cecil Kimber) - XN 01 and this car is still running in the UK (see Interesting Ys at www.mgytypes.org for both of these cars).

XN 02 was another special built by Dick but this was on a TD chassis.

I do not recall, when reading "An MG Experience" anything about another MG Y based special so please post some pictures if you have them and we will be pleased to research this for you.

Hi Paul,
If you read Chapter 5 of "an MG Experience", you will find it dedicated to "SHK7".

It was based on a part Y-Type front end, but with an independent rear suspension.

There are photos of the car on pages 93, 94, 95 & 96.

I too wonder where it might be today ???

One day I will build a replica of this car with some of my spare parts in the shed.

I'll get me coat now !.

Looks like a Y rear axle too in the photo on page 93 - what do you think?

Sorry I missed it on my quick flick through earlier. I think these though are the only connections to a Y - the car did not have a Y chassis but a specially built one. Clearly though Dick wanted to make good use of the excellently designed front suspension as laid down on a Y!

If any one wants a copy of the excellent book An MG Experience by Dick Jacobs, I have a spare. Contact me off the BBS.

I'm not altogether sure Cecil Kimber gave Dick Jacobs his Y chassis, as Kimber died two years before the Y was launched.... but maybe his spirit moved in a mysterious way!

But a Y with an independent rear end? Now we're talking....
Tim Griggs

Yes Tim, correct, John Thornley, not CK - my mistake.

Different guy, same spirit, all about the cars

SHK 7 is apparently now in Japan and was recently auctioned by the NTA Tax. More information may be forthcoming soon as I am seeking a translation of http://www.nta.go.jp/kantoshinetsu/sonota/chotatsu/buppin/04/nyusatsu/241217car3.pdf.

This information was provided by Aki Hasegawa - a motorcycle enthusiast who found this thread and put 2 and 2 together. Thank you Aki.

I have today received the following email from Tim O'Rorke:

I happened to put into google SHK7 as I used to own the car and up popped some comments on it including one from you. However, I don't know how to add to the thread so thought I would email you in case any of the history of the car is of interest.
I purchased it as an MG-mad youth of about twenty back in circa 1962 from a doctor. He was very disappointed in it's performance which was abysmal. I took the car back to Dick Jacobs who stripped down the engine and found that it was fitted with standard pistons which gave a very low compression ratio ( about 5:1) as the unit had a special crank to reduce the capacity to just under 1000cc. Once rectified, the car was good for just under 100mph and I used it as my everyday car for the next couple of years, taking it touring to spain one year. No weather protection and only aero screens. It was memorable.
About ten years later, my girl friend brought back a motor mag that had been abandoned at her office, and there it was, once more for sale. Naturally, I bought it again. By then it had been fitted with a supercharger and really motored. It was like driving a go-kart.
When I sold it for a second time, I think it went to America and disappeared so I am pleased to hear it is still alive and well.
Hope that's of some interest. I would, of course, love to know where she is now so if you ever hear, perhaps you would let me know. I have various photos which might be of interest to the current owner.

PS I repaid my girlfriend's kindness by marrying her!!

Well, that's it for now. I am sure there will be more and I hope that SHK 7 finds a new home.
