MG MG Y Type - Door seals

Hi All
I need some help or advice on the rubber door seals on our Y6381. The current seals are the original and in very poor condition, they were not replaced when car was restored. My father told me they needed replacing when I got the car from him.
I obtained some rubber seal for a Y.Which I am advised is the correct shape. The profile is like a inverted J. The worry I have is when we fitted one rear door with the new seal the door was very hard to close due to the thickness of the seal.Does the seal compress with time or should an adjustment be made to the door or have I the incorect seal.

Thank you
Royston

Royston,

Just completed my door seals after much delay this year. There are threads in the archive on this topic (Worth looking back)
In summary, the correct profile to my knowledge is no longer in production and is an obsolete item.

East Kent Trim near Deal, Kent supplied my seals, but they needed to be trimmed. The doors thankfully close shut, but the issue you refer to is common.

Be very careful when you buy the door seals as the ones normally supplied end up making it difficult or nigh on impossible to close the doors - I should know I wasted a fair bit of money on them a few years ago. Keep the original section and send a sample to the supplier stating that the section must be the same or you will reject them.

East Kent trim are located on the web at http://www.classiccar-trim.com/.

Which product did you use Richard?

I have no connection with this company or financial interest in their products.

Paul, I might be wrong on this but having looked through the seals on the web site and assuming they are to scale (life size) then none of them will fit the inner door seal on the Y type (the ones that fit in the channel section that is). I have compared them to an original section I have by the way but if anyone knows different please let us know.

I do not know which item Richard used sorry.

Richard, which did you pick from their stuff and can you please tell us more about your experience?

Thanks

Hola,

Not sure which part number on their web site. Basically the profile of the section that sits in the door channel is the right width to fit and is the same width as original, the section that closes between the door and the frame was too long but was trimmed to fit. Although it is not the exact match of the original it does allow the doors to shut.

One tip for those who are in process of restoration is to make sure the channels are opened up prior to painting, some of mine were flat, and after being painted now wasn't time to mess around too much attempting to open the channel back up.

If I find the part ref. I'll post back.

Hi Folks,

A few months ago I did a bit of research with most of the trim suppliers.

The best match for the Y door seal (in theory) was East Kents 357. It looked very close to the original. My main concern was that it had a smaller 'foot' and therefore might get pulled out of the channel.

I say in theory because, as I dont have any doors on at the moment, I have not tried it in practice.

Another issue - Lee at that company was not sure if 357 was still available, despite the fact that they sent me a sample? He was supposed to get back to me but never did.

I have attached an image which shows three sections...from the top...East Kents 357, Woolies R40 and the original at the bottom.

357 is still listed on their website under 'windscreen rubber T sections'

I used a section from NTG, as recommended by Jack Murray - Part No 481. It is not cheam, but it does fit and the doors close.

NTG part number is actually R481 http://www.mgbits.com/contents/en-uk/d185_04.html#p5958 (enlarged picture is http://www.mgbits.com/contents/media/r481.jpg)currently £21.75 (inclusive of UK VAT @ 20% in the EU I believe) for a 12ft length.

I will be ordering some for my YT I think ... as soon as I have measured what I need!

Thanks for the confirmation that it worked for you Mike.
