MG MG Y Type - Door window glass weather strips

The weather strips that seal the glass on the inside and outside. ...how are they fitted...seem to recall using clips but its a bit messy doing it...is there an easier way. Has anyone ever used stick on felt or rubber? Any photos of what it should look like...I took mine off years ago....

Hi,

The outer strips screw direct to the door body, The inner strips are on fiddly L shaped brackets which pop rivet onto the window seal, They are then screwed to the door. I attach a picture of the ones I have recently fitted.

Thanks Paul.... looks like you have done a good job..presume its done with a normal pop riveting gun and the rivets are not peined over by 'hand'. Where did you get the aluminium brush strips from - is it Woolies or similar?Good to see you are still involved with Y types - I have memories of John Lawson talking about meeting up with you back in the early 80s...time flies.

Yes - normal pop rivet gun - Watch the size of the holes in the weatherstrip though. If you really want to excel, mark where the existing screw holes in the door are on a piece of card and transfer this to the weatherstrip (assuming you have the L shaped brackets). Yes I get my stuff from Woolies Part no for weatherstrip is 152. Good Luck, Paul

My good friend & best man (19 years ago today in fact!), Bill Spall restored three YA's after he retired.

He found a great solution to those fiddly L-brackets for the inner glass strips - just screw the strips on to the timber door capping, not the door itself.

It works a treat & saves many hours of work - and no one will notice.

That's lateral thinking for you...and to think I spent most of today getting two doors worth done by attaching the little brackets to the aluminium strips....I ended up using tiny BA nuts and bolts ..(as my pop riveter broke)....the heads sinking into the brush strip...it never occurred to me to make a paper template as Paul mentioned but I will from now on. Thanks for all the advice folks.

Thanks Tony, makes sense ...Refurbishing 1441 again after a 1978 refurbish. still in original interior trim.at my age falling into a Y is easier than threading oneself into a TF !!
