MG MG Y Type - Emails from Ukraine.... beware!

I've just had an email supposedly from regular contributor Bob Barham-Hall, and the warning lights went on, so I thought I'd check with the community here.

Bob doesn't publish an email address in his postings whereas I do, and therefore I can't check with him directly.

The email I received tells me that he's stuck in the Ukraine, needing money, and asks me if I can send some to him (the very specific amount of £780, in fact). As Bob and I have never been in touch directly, this came as a surprise. While I'm a generally helpful sort of guy, I felt the need to check the email for its "header" - the information regarding its origins and routing - and found that it came from a Russian email address, not from anything to do with Bob. The red light went on at this point.

It may be that the sort of scam usually originating in Nigeria - those where you are asked to help the orphan daughter of a former general get at her missing millions - has evolved, and scammers are using the names and emails to be found on boards like ours so that they appear credible.

Anyway, please take care here and don't send any money - and Bob, if you are actually stuck in Ukraine, leave us a message here and I'm sure we can help!

This is totally a scam. I asked the sender several detailed questions which they were able to answer quite thoroughly, and after I had called Bob and had a good chat with him on the phone, I can confirm he is alive and well, ... and safe at home.

If you see an email from someone you know asking you to do them a favor, look at the sender's email domain name (the bit after the @)and if you dont recognize it, delete the email.

Delighted to hear that Bob isn't stuck in a dodgy hotel in Kiev, and yes, Paul, we need to be vigilant about the origins of emails.

Now, back to finding out why the brakes keep sticking in a strange random way, but that's another thread.....

Yes a regular scam Tim!

I was hit last year the location was Portugal.
The problem when you are targeted like this is that you are out of action for a minimum of 24 hours and much longer.

My provider was very helpful and I managed to retrieve my e-mails and other info saved on my account. However, I lost all of my e-mail addresses Which was a complete pain!

The advice that I was given was to change your password regularly.

I would add that when I was done someone did go the trouble of sending the money. Fortunately contact was made with Jo who confirmed that I was perfectly okay. Thankfully, the very kind individual was able to get their cash back from the post office! So always check with the individual just in case they really are in that part of the world. Otherwise just ignore them.

All the best

Hi to all,
I am so sorry for any who have received these begging letters. I am still having problems trying to sort emails etc. and am pleased to be informed that the phishing emails did not introduce any nasties!! To other computers.
I do change passwords from time to time but the hacker got through. Bt Yahoo has had many other users compromised too but this is of little comfort.
Paul's phone call from across the 'Pond' came on the first day when I was literally tied to computer and telephone responding to similar responses.

Happy motoring, and may all your IT problems be insignificant!
