MG MG Y Type - Engine and Gearbox Compatabilities

Someone on the TD/TF site suggested you gents maybe be able to assist.

The gurus amongst you should be able to confirm or deny what my limited knowledge base has revealed.

The MG Y Type gearbox is the same as a TC box? Are the ratios the same?

The MG Y Type engine is the same as the TC engine and is fitted with a 7 inch clutch?

Thanks in advance.

No idea about MG TCs but as a first shot I would suspect not as far as the ratios go. You can find the details for the ratios in the MG Y in the <<Technical Centre>>, then go to the <<Technical Data>> page, then select the MG Y Data sheets. You will then be able to check those ratios against some records for the MG TC.

The engine is covered in the chapter in Let there be Ys fairly exhaustively. Certainly the 7 1/4 inch clutch is inter-changable.

The MG TC and Y type boxes are not interchangeable as far as I know. The TC and YA engines both used a 7 1/4 in clutch assembly with the appropriate bell housing (5/8in cross shaft diameter)and appropriate flywheel . Later TDs and YBs had an 8 in clutch and a bell housing with a 3/4 in cross shaft [as opposed to the 5/8 cross shaft on the YA and TC.] with a larger flywheel. If you use a TD or YB 8 inch bell housing with the 3/4 inch cross shaft it only fits the later flywheel as per TD and YB...if you use it with an earlier assembly it puts the thrust washer out of line. Hope that makes sense.

Why do you ask?

The TC gearbox is not the same and rumoured to be much sturdier then it's later counterparts on the Y and TD/TF.
Apparently the TC 'box was used extensively in Australian racing car specials that were powered by 6 and 8 cylinder engines.

In 'Blower' the following ratio's are listed:

ratios Y-type and TD
rev 3,5:1
1st 3,5:1
2nd 2,07:1
3rd 1,385:1
top 1:1

TC
rev 3,38:1
1st 3,38:1
2nd 1,95:1
3rd 1,36:1
top 1:1

TA
rev 4,78:1
1st 3,715:1
2nd 2,2:1
3rd 1,42:1
top 1:1

The XPAG in the Y-type is basically the same as the XPAG from the TC.
On the Y-type you only get 1 SU H2 carburettor instead of the twin set up on the TC. The Y also should have a tamer camshaft and different distributor setting, but after 60 years few Y's (or TC's) are how they left the factory.

A lot of Y types ended up being cannibalised for their untrashed XPAG's that fed the abused T-types.

OK, I just read your post on the TD/TF site.... I rest my case on the last sentence of my post above. LOL

That Y-type engine should fit your TF although that should have an 8" clutch and I'm not sure which oil pump is on the Y-type you're looking at.

The Y-gearbox is basically the same as the TF apart from the remote control that bolts on.

This is the eBay listing in question:

I'm sure some Y-type owners would die for such a solid body! It's an early body with the off-centre battery box.

The engine looks very rough with cracked chain cover, broken crank pulley, crumpled rocker cover etc. etc. It has the early style oil pump that should be different from the TF.

The exhaust manifold doesn't belong to the Y

lets hope a Y Owner salvages for Y type....LOL

The MGY body at the scrap metal yard in suburban Melbourne was sold for $A412. Bargain!

I haven't inspected the body yet but will do so in the next few days. It looks a lot better in the pics than the body I started with four years ago!

It was bought by a local MG enthusiast who is thinking of using the chassis as a base for an MGY special, and tells me he will probably sell on the other parts to whoever needs them.

At least it won't be crushed and recycled into cat food cans! He has the space and willingness to store these parts.

for posterity I saved a picture from eBay

Inspected the Y in the scrapyard in Melbourne suburb yesterday. Ebay picture a good likeness. Body looks like it was sand/bead blasted then left exposed to weather for some time. Quite heavy surface rust but no rust holes that I could see. The section under the spare wheel opening is filled - I suspect that it might be rusty under there. No other filler in the car except lead as used in the factory.

Engine is sad - starter motor mounting ring has been smashed off, so has the front section of the sump. Looks like it might have been dropped on to the starter. Neither block nor sump would be useable but innards of engine might be OK. Turns over still. Timing chain cover also broken. Engine number is SC13132.

Chassis looks pretty sound too - it also looks like it's been sandblasted then left outside. Odd that the front extensions still have paint on them so I couldn't find a chassis number.

Looks like someone has made a start on restoring the car, then stopped. Would love to know the story behind this!
