MG MG Y Type - Engine Side Plates

It seems that the steel side plate of my YT has been over tightened through its live span. Thus, I might buy a new Aluminum one that seems to be stiffer. NTG offers two versions:

1. a double vented type with two "valves" on its side

2. a singular vented type with a pipe adaptor (similar to the original one)

I rather fancy the double vented type but am a bit worried that an oil mist would "lubricate" the left hand side of the engine block when it breathes.

Are my worries justified - does anyone use such a double vented plate?

Personally I dont like either version Anton and think both are hideous.

https://mgbits.com/contents/en-uk/p2398_Engine-Side-Plate-Original-Steel.html is much more authentic. If your original is only suffering from over tightening it can be reshaped without too much difficulty.

The vented one looks quite deep compared to the other one--Maybe it has a baffled chamber inside---I wonder, if you were to ask them for a pic of the other side.
I'm also thinking that because of it's extra volume and if it uses the original big sheet gasket any oil in any fumes would have plenty of time to drop down before it reached the vents.
We used vents very similar to that bolted straight onto the top sides of the valve covers on our Chev v8 racer and there wasn't any issue with them at all
I think it'd be ok--

I agree that the double vented type takes some time to get used to. But the original steel one never became oil tight with its slotted elbow, no matter what I tried. Also, if I can get rid of the steel pipe, I have better access to the thin copper pipe connecting the block and the head. A MG mate of mine is doing up a TC and is using the double vented plate with success - so, I might get used to its look....

I like your feedback, regarding the extra volume of the double vented version. Maybe my TC friend took note if there is a buffled chamber on the inside. Plus, I will ask NTG if they can supply a description or a photo of the rear side of the side plate.

Hi Anton
I have the single pipe version at my Kimbers Kastle Klub and can send a photo of the inside. I never bought this but came complimentary with some other Y bits ( not NTG) and will most likely use it on a currently rebuilt engine.
I reckon it looks ok on the side , but it is only a matter of personal taste.
I don’t think I would ever buy one , but you may say I have in a way.

The inside of the side plate. I will use despite other opinions, use the original if you wish, it is the Original.

Thank you for the inside photos. Looking at them, what worries me a bit is that the upper hole seems to be in line with the ellbow on the outside. This might lead to an excessive "blowout".
On my daughters TD, I used a metall plate "System Paul Ireland" (a thin plate, covered with kork on both sides). I made sure to avoid a set-up as described above, in my second sentence. See attachment one.

Best regards
Anton

P.S.: for fun, I add a picture of the TD, that I used in an uphill race, some time ago o;)

Nice TD Anton, but your friend's black TC--magic

In my mail of November 17, I mixed up things. I ment to say that the elbow hole in the lid is nearly in line with the hole in the original cork gasket (see attachment). This might lead to too much "blowout" and is why, I went for the Paul Ireland modification with the metal plate.
Sorry about the mix-up, I was in a bit of a hurry when answering your comment.

So, I would go ahead with your Alu side plate - in conjuntion with a cork sandwiched metal plate recommended by Paul Ireland....

NTG confirms that the Aluminium side plates they sell have baffle plates:

I asked Mike, he has told me that they are fitted with baffles.
He has this on his TD.
