MG MG Y Type - Enough is enough!

Today I took out the YB, to air it and circulate its fluids. I chose a quiet mid-morning and to return mid-afternoon, so as to try to miss the grid-lock we suffer around here.

But as I ran through Woburn Sands a modern car ran so close up behind me, as if to try to push me along, even though I was doing the 30mph speed limit. Why? Anyway, this happens so often, that I banged the brakes on, and he pulled well back. Then we both took the Cranfield road. Again he closed up on me as this is a 40mph road and I was doing 40mph. I again operated the brake lights. He pulled back a little, but soon closed up again, so I stopped quickly; far too quick for him to be able to overtake. I went to his window and demanded to know why he was tailigating me. His female passenger look startled. I asked him if he knew what the two-second rule was, why did he try to get me to go faster so breaking the speed limits, and if he had ever read the Highway Code and had in fact passed his test? He looked dumfounded, and was speachless. I told him if he closed up on me again I would dial 999 and claim he was harrassing me. We then parted. ( Alas, I do not actually own a mobile phone, I'm not frying my brain for anyone, but he did not know that.)

So, to all you youngsters, in your modern Euroclones, WHY do you have to try to push an old car along even when it is running at the speed for that area? And, beware if it is a two-tone YB, I might just get out swinging my starting handle next time!!!

Yours grumpily,

NC.

Hi Grumpy

I feel sorry for you guys over there. Here in the beautiful Pacific NorthWest coastal area we dont have either the problem of road rage, or of tailgating, and if we do, the coutesy of the code here is to pull over and let them go knock their brains out on the next tree lined corner!

Happy of the 7 dwarfs!

Well done Neil! He must have been scared sh*tless.

Tongue firmly stuck in cheek now:
- when did you last check your speedometer against a know good one?
- when my grandfather at the age of 87 started complaining about all those impertinent lorrydrivers passing him at great speed on the motorway, flashing their lights and sounding their horns, we decided to sabotage his Daimler Double Six.... How old did you say you where? ;-)

Sadly, that seems to be one of the problems with owning an older car in the UK. During the summer I visited Jersey and thought what a wonderful place it would be to drive a Y Type - quiet country lanes, low speed limit and old-fashioned manners on the road.

If I ever found that somebody was driving too close, my inclination would be to slow down rather than speed up.

I urge caution when confronting other motorist, one just doesn't know who they are. We are witnessing a dramatic increase in violence in this country. My experience when on the hard shoulder of the M4 demonstrated to me that some people would be prepared to deliberately harm, and I wasn't going to hang around waiting for the AA. Based on personal experience I will express the view that we are the most dangerous drivers in western Europe and USA among the most courteous.

Now what we need is to find a way to adapt this technology to our Ys:
