About 1 day to go for this MG Y in Queensland Australia for a mere $6000AU - its a steal!!

I have no financial interest in this car ... but I'll bet the farm that it is a previously unknown car!!

Interesting Paul.

It does look promising though whether it's ' a steal' I dont know. It's only really of any interest to anyone in Oz and no-one has made a bid yet. At current exchange rates the seller is asking around £3k. I have no idea what it would cost to import to the UK add to that around £3k min to undertake a reasonable quality restoration and you are talking around £7k plus with import costs - could be worth it but the fact that no-one has made a bid could be revealing.

Although, I've probably got it all wrong and some OZ will within the next few hours have picked up a bargain (allowing for some local batering)! If it is unknown to the Register that would be good.

All set up for the Spring Weekend - the weather is a little unsettled and very windy at present, so it could be hood up on the TA tomorrow. 35 booked in for the dinner tomorrow and 28 Y's + 7 interlopers for Sunday. It's a steam Sunday so that could add to a good wk/end.

Sincerely

Makes me wish I was living in Oz. Looks like an original two tone green YA (unless I am going colour blind) that was popular in the early production run in the late 40s. I'd love to be over there now looking at it (not sure the wife would agree!).

I've been in contact with the owner and he gave me the following details. Engine no. XPAG/SC/X10794, Chassis no. B281, Car no. Y/0974, MG 644/823, 1.25 MG-644. Atleast you now know where Y/974 is, Queensland Australia. Can any one say if it is either a YA or YB? My interest lies with a YB.
Dave.

Hi David

The listing is incorrectly classified as a YB - it if was a YB it would have an SC2 engine, so this is Y/0974. It is a great find - normally the back is begining to rust out indicating a bad SWC floor. This looks to be good, and I would suspect that inside it is actually very sold.

Can you persuade one of your order to buy a new project David?

Did the car actually sell or were bidders put off by the reserve price? I have just been watching a programme on ITV4 called Classic Gear part of which highlighted Auctions.

One of the guys from Coys, the Auctioneers, made the point that an original car is always worth buying (which I'm sure most of us knew anyway. Like all things it's the restoration costs that are the expensive items and of course spending a considerable amount of money - say double the costs of purchase - might increase the value significantly. So a cheque book limited restoration might add a further $12,000 AU dollars on the bill. The car then might market at around $18,000 AU dollars. The top price for a well restored example - so contrary to my initial comments it might be worthwhile buying.

If someone in OZ can do the restoration work themselves then it might be a good buy. Though as no-one appears to have made a bid (which has now closed)does that mean that the vehicle is not quite as desirable as was initially thought?

Sincerely

This one would be one of the rare early two tone cars yes? Would this be Shires Green and Elizabethan Grey as mentioned by Clausager in his book on MG saloons? Even the wheels are two toned.

Cheers,
Matthew.
