MG MG Y Type - Exhaust manifold

Gentlemen, please excuse this incursion from a non Y type owner....attached is a picture of a manifold. Someone tell me if it is from a Y type. Its not mine but will probably be forsale soon.

Hi Terry

Confirmed - Y Type - single carburettor, so probably off a YA or YB.

Regards

Paul

Let me know when and how much. :)

I'm also convinced it will fit a Y. But why isn't there an MG-octagon on it, as on my YA? Was this MG-less manifold perhaps fitted to the Wolseley 14/40 XPAW?

I also have such an MG-less manifold and I'm in the process of removing the inlet-part for my twin-carburettor conversion adventure, but that another story.

Thank You Paul, Steve and Willem, as I suspected this manifold is the remain of Skip Kelseys business and personal stash. Skip had the Y type that was supercharged and wirewheeled by Al Moss. So there is the manifold at $100 and a Y type grill shell w/slats at @$500....if there is interest here, great. Otherwise they will put them on Ebay.
Cheers

MG TA, NA, TC, Arnolt, TF but no Y type....but I did once have a Triumph Mayflower, does that count? ;-)

"I did once have a Triumph Mayflower, does that count?"

Yes. For what though, I'm not sure. :)

I too wish to change over to twin carbs. Why not just use the TF inlet and exhaust manifolds instead of modifying the Y manifold? Will they not work? Thanks. Larry

Changing over to twin carbs wont do much for you Larry unless you replace the cam with a TD profile too ... unless you just want to burn more gas!

The 54bhp of the YT was with twin carbs AND a TD cam - folk often overlook this last bit as it is hidden in the engine!

Personally - for 9bhp - the juice aint worth the squeeze my friend!

Larry,
Yes, preferably you should use the TC/D/F exhaust manifold because it is shaped much better for the two center cilinders. If you look at the Y-manifold you'll see that there are very nasty bends in the centrepipe for the exhaust gasses. But I have to watch the budget very carfully and had a spare Y-manifold that I bought for EUR 5,-. The TD inletmanifold cost me EUR 75,-.

Paul,
That 9 hp is 20% up. So in relative tuning-terms that's quite a lot.

As usual you are right about the camshaft, but in my history file I noticed a bill for a TD-camshaft so I hope my camshaft is correct for the twin H2 carburettors that I bought in a joblot of early Magnette 1500 parts. I was going to check the degrees that the valves are open to see if my hope is correct.

Michael Nicholson ones asked my why I wanted to fit twin carburettors, I could only come up with "because I can...". And I think it will look very nice because the very polishable cast-aluminium Magnette airbox fits with only minor modification....

The biggest disadvantage of the Y-manifold is that the intake gets very hot. A big part of the inletsurface also acts as exhaust pipe. This is very good for warming-up, but after 10 miles that advantage is lost, because the petrol/air mixture gets too hot for it's own good. That is why turbo-engines gain from an intercooler.
Alas you can not seperate the Y inlet- and exhaustmanifold as you can (and should) on older Mini 1000's. On the Mini both power and economy gain.

So my guess is that even with a standard Y-camshaft I will gain, provided that I use lean needles (which gives good results in my single H2 now). And I will have hours of cheap spannering to do!

I guess I should have mentioned I am going to do a rebuild soon. In my TF I use an AEG122 cam, and plan on that for the Y, or either a cam. I have an original Lucas Laystall alloy head to use along with original Derrington extractors, if they will fit, or a TF intake and exhaust manifold. All of the parts are on hand except the cam. The engine, like my TF, will be ported, polished, and balanced, so along with the twins carbs should make a bit of a difference. I have given the car to my Grandson, so this is a joint project. We are in the process of a complete restoration that will take several years, as he is a college student.

I failed to mention the current engine is a factory Gold Seal replacement , so I have no idea as to what cam it has.
