MG MG Y Type - Exhaust Pipe Issues

I am having some trouble fitting a stainless exhaust to my YA.

Initially I bought the three pieces from the Octagon Club. The front section would not attach as the flange was at the wrong position and the pipe wanted to sit where the sump was.

A second Octagon front pipe had the flange at a better angle but when the silencer section was fitted the exhaust was about 6" too far over and could not be connected to the crossmember bracket. The tail pipe would have exited the chassis forward of the rear wheel.

An NTG front pipe was obtained and fitted and was a much better fit, however, when the silencer was fitted it was too close to the rear crossmember for the tail pipe to be fitted.

The NTG and Octagon front pipes are the same length and the NTG and Octagon silencer sections are the same length.
I have tried tail pipes from both suppliers.

I guess that I could cut / shorten / rebend at various points but I shouldn't have to really.

I have attached a photo to try and illustrate the problem.
Am I the only one with this problem...?

Rob,

I simperthise with your predicament, I used a exhaust from NTG due to you showing me the problem with the octagon club front pipe when you had the chassis at Silverstone year before last.

The NTG front pipe did need a little tweaking to get it to line up with the support near the front cross member however I did get it all lined up on the correct brackets before finally nipping up the pipe joints.

I think I may have opened up the holes in the top flange a little to allow the front pipe to move nearer in line with the support clamp.

Thanks Chris,

I will contact you directly to talk in a little more detail.

I bought a stainless steel exhaust for the YT in 2010 from Octagon and experienced the same problems with the front pipe that you referred to. What I hadn't appreciated was that the YT front pipe is marginally different from that for the saloon. NTG supplied the pipe and Geoff at Octagon took the unused pipe back and returned my cash. It all fitted okay but I did have the advantage of using a friend's pit which made the whole process much more straightforward.

Yes the YT front pipe is completely different to the Y/YB because of the position of the exhaust manifold/single to Twin Carburettor relationships.

That, coupled with the fact that these cars, unlike later cars such as the Magnette and MGA etc were not so MACHINE assembled as HAND FETTLED. As someone once said about Y Types - they fit where they touch!

It is not uncommon for parts like this not to totally line up Rob so dont be dis-heartened. I wonder if your first front pipe was for a YT and not a Y/YB.

A hoist is invaluable for getting right under these things!

when i bought my car the front pipe was pressing on the clutch cable, i hacksawed it in two about 2 inches below the manifold flange and welded a piece of tube in to lower it by 1 inch.i came to the conclusion that it had a yt front pipe fitted,im not at the exhaust stage of the rebuild yet, but from the comments i think i will repair the old exhaust or make/ modify a minor 1000 system. i hope you get yours sorted Rob

I had a different problem with an NTG exhaust system some time ago - the stub tubes at each end of the silencer were the wrong diameter. NTG changed it without question. However, the tailpipe was then too long! (better than too short I guess)
It doesn't really matter within reason I suppose, but just for interest, does anybody know how far beyond the bodywork the tailpipe should stick out?

You really want it so that it is about an inch beyond the bumper so that non of the acidity of the exhaust sucks back onto the bumper as you drive down the road and the air vortexes behind the car I think. Just watch as you walk behind the car in the shop or garage ... but then you will only smash your shins a couple of times before you learn!

Thanks Paul
Quite right - it was my shins that prompted me to ask the question!
