MG MG Y Type - Exhaust Systen

I am restoring a 1950 MG YA which has an exhaust manifold, and nothing else with regard to the exhaust. Will an exhaust system for a MG TC, TD, or TF fit this car?
Mike Lutz

Not without modification unless you also use the twin carb and manifold set up from a TD/YT. The exhaust manifold on a YA is different and the pipe which attaches to it will need some major bending and twisting to fit. I know because 30 years ago I got a SS system for my YT. Turned out it was for a YA and that is what we had to do. Terry

Both the MG Octagon Car Club and NTG do stainless steel systems and gaskets. The MGOCC wont ship to the US though for insurance reasons. NTG will though. They aint cheap, but they are good - I have fitted a couple to cars since I have been here.

Terry is correct, the header pipe for a YT is different to a YA/B which is different to a TD or TC. The muffler is also different.

NTG are currently waiting on header pipes - I know this as I am waiting for them to ship another system to me!

Just spoke with Paul Banyard at NTG, they hope to have the header pipe in within the next 7 days. He is looking forward to getting your order Michael.

I do have a YT exhaust Manifold and two carbs for this car. Will the TD exhaust system work with this manifold. Should I purchase the exhaust pipe and have the rest custom made?

It will work ... but the angle of the YT header willhave to be reset. The only way to do this is to cut the pipe and reweld it for the existing manifold. I beleive the YT header is also a different angle to the TD.

As to adding two carbs, it is a relative waste of time and money unless you also pull the camshaft out and reprofile that too. The increase in bhp from 45 to 54 will only be realized if you reprofile the cam. The money, in my opinion, would be better spent in getting the proper exhaust from NTG to be honest.

I think that the TC,TD & YT exhaust manifolds are the same. I say that because I have a spare from a TC/TD and have had my YT original coated and used the spare with no problem. So the TD exhaust pipe should work, a TD muffler should work, the pipe from the muffler though would need to be longer.

Suggest you phone Joe Curto in NY. He knows everything about carbs and will have hands on experience with what fits and what doesn't. Terry
