MG MG Y Type - Front Brake Hoses Rubbing

Hi All, A while ago I noticed that the front brake hoses on my YT had been rubbing on the tyre and the outside of the hose was starting to wear. This was with standard tyres fitted. I have since fitted wider wheels and radials which otherwise clear all the suspension and body. I now have a new set of hoses which I am fitting and they will also rub.

Image 1 is of the hose with the wheel on full lock. Note the car is on the hoist so the suspension is on full rebound, but the situation is essentially the same with the car on the ground. Image 2 is of the hose with the wheel in the straight ahead. There is plenty of clearance between the hose and the tyre.

The temporary fix is to fit something to the outside of the hose that will wear instead of the hose itself. This can be easily replaced when the wear gets too much.

Has anyone else had this problem and how was it overcome?

Thanks, Ewan

I know this may not be a real answer to your question Ewan but, as you say, it is possible to fit a covering over the hose to prevent damage. I have used a nylon "spring" like coil on my TC which is easy to fit without any dismantling. Some people have suggested that these coils damage the hoses but I have never seen this in many (40 plus) years of using them. I have never had any negative comments from the official testers either, in the days that we had to get our cars tested over here. They are available in various sizes and are used, in the main, for tidying electrical cables. Another answer to the problem is to loosen and turn one end of the hose until you achieve clearance. The slight twist causes it to take up a diffent arientation further away from the tyre. This also has not been seen to do any damage in all the time I have used it on the rear axle hose of my TC which has a tendency to want to rub on the sidescreen box. In fact I use both methods here.

You may wish to try loosening the hard line, then loosen the fixing nut at the frame end and rotating the flex line until it takes a different path to clear the tire, then tighten in that position and tighten the hard line up. You may have to bleed that wheel again.

Should solve it for you.
CR Tyrell

I concur with Mr Tyrell - apply some twist in the brake hose to help it hold it's position - but not too much.

You can also fit a line of zip ties to insulate the hose from possible damage. I have done this where I did not want too much twist in the hose and contact was only made with the hose at low speed on full lock or where the hose might rub on my telescopic shocks.

Good Luck

Where did you buy your hoses from Ewan?

I agree with Mr Tyrell and Tony about giving it a twist as I had the same problem. My new hoses where about 10mm longer than the 50 years old plus ones that came off.. NOTE Rubbing brake hoses on a road worthy inspection should be a fail

Doing a brake hose inspection on a roadworthy or UK mot test and letting damaged lines pass you are leaving yourself wide open to loose your house against a insurance company that is facing a payout...BOB WOOD

Hi All, Thanks for your feedback. I have covered the hose in plastic cable wrap and given the hose a bit of a twist to reduce the rubbing. I'm not sure where the replacement (or the original) hoses came from. The ones I took off measure 385mm overall and 352mm between the outside of the nut flanges. The new hoses were a tad shorter ... but I didn't measure them before installing and tightening the wheel cylinder end. Does anyone have the measurements for the original hoses? Thanks, Ewan

Unfortunately this will not cure the problem it will just delay it . The edge of the wheel rim will rub through the soft plastic and then the hose . If the car had to have a MOT test it would fail if the hose rubbed on a lock , it would even fail if the outer rubber was slightly damaged and you could see the cords . Just remember these cars only have a single line system , one small cut and no brakes.
