MG MG Y Type - Fuel Filler caps

I am finishing off the restoration now and wanted to replace the original pressed steel fuel filler cap as it has a dent in it. I purchased one from a reputable supplier but the outer seal cup (that goes over the top of the tube onto the cork washer) is just slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the filler tube.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Paul, I made a washer from chamois leather and after a fiddle its stays closed but my MOT garage wants me to make the filler cap fuel proof in order to meet regulations. I can make a new gasket but what is the true MOT position? Slater

The MoT requires that the fuel filler be sealed so that if the car were to go into a roll there would be no fuel spilt. The filler cap has two cups in it, the smaller should go down the filler pipe, the outer then sits, spring loaded, into the recess between the filler pipe and the outer sheath/casing.

In between the fuel pipe and the outer sheath/casing there should be a cork washer. These are available from from Brown & Gammons & the Octagon Car Club. This should make a good seal. Hope that helps you Slater.

My problem is not the seal, it is the fact that the outer cup on the new filler cap unit is smaller on its inner diameter, than the outer diameter of the filler tube.

Maybe you can take out the dent in your original cap? If not then I'm sure it can be filled and then rechromed. Should be a simple procedure either way.

Hi Steve

I have considered that, however, the new repros are a solid casting, where as the old ones are a pressed steel which is peined down. It would be very difficult to get it off without damaging it more - unless there is someone out there who has done this already and is willing ...

Hoping!

Paul,
When my car gets back with the filler tube you gave me I will check out the filler caps and we can check dimensions. I might have to send it back to you. By the way for Steve's benefit the outer cover is Stainless Steel and with patience it can be prized off, the dent removed and then buffed. Sounds easy but can be done.

Just a passing note, don't forget that cars up to latish '49 had a plated brass cast cap, the stainless on appeared from memory about car 3600 or so according to Lawrence(from memory)

Apparently there are two sizes to these replicas - Y Type owners need the larger one so, subject to stock now being available I am sorted. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!
