MG MG Y Type - Fuel pump ticking

I have just had my fuel pump checked but it still ticks frequently and sometimes wildly when the engine warms up. Could it be an air leak in the pipe connectors from either the tank or pump end? Or could it be a blockage in the pipe? Has anyone encountered this problem and what was your remedy?
L D Wallace

LD - If the pump is a OE SU pump, the wild ticking will be the result of an air leak on the inlet side of the pump, either in the pump itself or the line from the tank to the pump. If the problem is in the pump, there is a gentleman in Gloucester AU who can repair it for you. You can find a link to his web site and his e-mail address in the Links section of my web site at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ Cheers - Dave

I concur with David - you have a sucking leak somewhere as opposed to a pouring leak (unless you can see pools of gasolene on the floor. If David recommends someone ... they will be good!

Success! Wilson Carburettor Service in Airport West, a suburb of Melbourne, inspected the unit again and identified the source of the air leakage as coming from a slight distortion in the base of the metal casting fuel pump body. 60 years had finally taken its toll. They fitted a new body and it now operates properly, much to my relief.

There isn't much that Dave DuBois doesnt know about these things!

Glad to hear everything is sorted and you are back on the road again.

If one of the non-return-valves, the exit one usually, has been fitted with its knurled face facing the wrong way, the pump will leak internally and tick all the time. The leakage means it cannot maintain the 2psi approx, so it 'pumps' again. It is easy to check that the SMOOTH face is sitting on the valve seat, not the knurled face. The 'valves' live under the inlet and outlet unions.

Otherwise you have an air leak.
