MG MG Y Type - Gearbox Issues

Over the last six days Jo and I have enjoyed extensive use of the YT travelling 600 miles visiting friends and participating in Norman Verona's Morecambe to Scarborough Coast to Coast run (175 miles in one day!) and then from Scarborough to Sheffield and then home on Monday.

One issue that arose was a difficulty in engaging third when both changing up and down. This was not so every time. All other gear engagement is fine.

I suspect that it is wear and tear as the box is probably the original. Have owners come across this and if so what remedies have they taken up?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jerry. Jumping out of third on overrun is not uncommon on these boxes after extensive mileage. Certainly my TC does this. Many will point to a selector problem but the consensus seems to lie with the layshaft having too much end float. I suppose this could also cause difficulties with gear selection. Most gear selection problems are clutch related though this would probably be noticable on all gears.
Just a suggestion.

Hi Jerry, Can you be more specific as to the engagement problem - do the gears grind or is there "resistance" to engagement.

Does it easily "pop out" of 3rd on overrun as suggested by Ian ?.

Can you climb a steep hill in 3rd without it "popping out" under load ?.

Thanks Tony

The engagement when changing down from 4th to 3rd and up from 2nd to 3rd was very sloppy with play from side to side. Essentially its a resistance but not every time and when engaged it remains in gear and changing up and down is not affected.

When in 3rd and accelerating up a hill it remains in gear and does not pop out.

I had thought about clutch adjustment (?).

I think your problem is in the shifting area - remove the gear lever cover (four bolts), and check the gates are secure on the 3rd/4th selector shaft. You can do this with the gearbox in the car.

You may have also broken the spring at the base of the gear lever - that can lead to side play in some circumstances.

Good Luck

Thanks Tony
Will follow that up and report
back.
