MG MG Y Type - Gearbox leak

The YT has an annoying leak from the speedometer cable port on the gearbox. Is this an indication of an over full gearbox? I have changed the cable and seal to no avail. any comments helpful. Tom in very snowy upstate New York

There was a chap in Australia by the name of John Allen (now Dec'd) who went to the trouble to fix EVERY source of oil leaks in his YT.

He did succeed after a few years and his fix for the speedo drive was to machine the brass housing for the drive gear to accept a small O-Ring. The shaft itself is very hard and too thin for the groove, so the housing was the only option.

I have also seen a plastic tube fitted outside the speedo cable for the first 12 inches and hose clamped to the gearbox - this keeps the oil in the tube and not dripping on the floor.

PS - I seem to recall there is something in the Hints & Tips on the IMGYTR website on curing this oil leak.

Tom,

A slightly cheaper "fix" from the colonies. If you haven't bought from Doug before, be assured he is the absolute BEST.

His p/n GE 185 $90/exchange.

I am not totally convinced that an o-ring is the best at providing a rotating axial oil seal, but several sites claim success.

Hmmm, time to review the price of my spare speedo drive housings !.

I agree with your thoughts on O-rings Rocky, but as they run in oil on at least one side they appear to endure the application.

Perhaps the rpm is lower than we perceive ?.

I had a massive leak from the cable. I just inserted an "O" ring of the appropriate size and so far it has worked. leaks just enough to lube the cable... no drips. on the floor. So I call it a success.

Tony,
The speedometer face on YB0952 has a tiny number "1600" directly above the trip mileage window. I believe this number indicates the cable rpm at which the speedometer should indicate 60 MPH. Not exactly slow, and a rare speed for our cars to achieve, so I guess the o-ring seal retrofit doesn't wear too quickly.

I met John Allen in the early 90's when I was rebuilding my car, attached photo is some of the hints he drew for me.
