MG MG Y Type - Green.

Is there a factory paint code for a color similar to "Forest Green" which I can give to a modern paint shop? I will be painting my wheels soon as they are chipping badly. I need to choose a color which will A) match the car now and B) be used to paint the body later on. If I can use a factory color that would be preferable to flipping through a paint chip book.

Here's are a coupke photos of the car for an idea of the current color I'm trying to find a close match for:

Hi Steve

As you know your car is not an original colour scheme and "Forest Green" is not an original colour/color (getting the hang of this bi-ligualism thing now!!).

For a full list see Colour Schemes under Technical Centre. The nearest would be Woodlands Green at a guess, however, the colours shown under Colour Scheme are a guide and not definitive as monitors vary in how they show colours - and printers then give a different hue altogether.

Your best bet is to call the phone line for Nexaautocolor in the UK and ask them to fax you over the formula (follow the link on the page). You will need to know whether you are going to use two-pack or cellulouse paint when you call. Have the page to hand so you can give them the ICI codes, but I have found that all the codes are useful in case they cannot trace it on the BMC code.

Happy hunting

Steve,
If you take a chip of the old paint from a wheel to a supplier of automotive refinishing products, they can use a spectrometer to come up with a matching formula.

I thought of that but if there is a factory color similar to what I have now, I would rather use that. I have a month before I do this project so there's time for a bit of research.

Hi Steve

Your closest bet I think will be Woodlands Green then.

I think British Racing Green will be easer to get than Woodlands Green and it's pretty much the same colour.

I finished my 1947 Y in ICIP420XXX0100 British Racing Green. This was additionally described 420MIX-1 British Bacing Green 2855. The supply was made from a eye match and was I recall a colour used on Austin Healey Sprite / MG Midget. On the tin it says P420-0093. This is ICI and the last numbers may be a batch. My letter to the body sprayer 20/12/00 explains that ICI told me the BRG tint above was the continuation name for Shires Green which is the correct name for the tint oringinally used on my car.

Incidentally the other colour used was Elizabeth Grey which doesn't look Grey but is still available from ICI : ICIP420XXX0250 or with a number 0126. I was then in touch with an ICI station at Maidenhead I think it was- or Slough UK. Very knowledgeable.

There is Two B.R Greens a 1950s one which is lighter (you see it on Z types)and a later Dark one which is much more common and I think a better Colour used on MGBs Jaguars etc.
Edit
I've just looked at the standox (Dupont)web site and there is a formula for B.R.G/woodlands green the same colour the year is wrong but thats not uncommon! Heres the link http://www.sxcolor.info/scripts/colorinfo.dll/category?b=1&m=001&l=3&flow=special
Look under passenger car, Rover, British racing green
But don't take any notice of the years

I have always found Nexacolor have the formula at their finger tips if you have te ICI code and / or BMC Code. Normally faxed through to me within 2 minutes of putting the phone down - cannot beat that for service can you? Very pleasant people to deal with too, a rare delight these days!

To be honest you don't need the formula Just go to the Spray Shop and say what Colour you would like.I don't no about the in US but over here most Garages buy there paint in.
John

Hi John

You are right, I dont know either. As a total amatuer, I always buy the paint for them as I (and I never used you as you were at the wrong end of the UK more was the pity) always bought my paint, took it to the garage and kept the surplus to control the colour absolutely, and also to control the left over too! I would take the formula to Brown Bros in Eastleigh Hants, who would equally happily mix it for me.

Best wishes,

Paul
